Vivian for a boy's middle name

I'm due a boy in November.

My partner suggested Vivian as a middle name. My mum died 9 year's ago and her name was Vivienne so would be a way of remembering her. I hadn't thought of it before he suggested it. It would be nice to use her name but would it be too odd?

Thank you everyone.

Vivien is a boys name in France. It's lovely. Choose what you like, it's nothing to do with anyone else. You'll never make everyone happy anyway!

Cornflakes, Cornflakes, Cornflakes, Cornflakes, Cornflakes, Cornflakes, Cornflakes, Cornflakes, Cornflakes

I know a male Vivian. He gets the mick taken out of him all the time. Don't do it OP.

I don’t think it’s lovely!

My first thought was Vyvyan from The Young Ones. I see many other posters have beat me to it.

I know two men with Vivian as their first name. Both are known as Viv and neither was bullied because of their name.
One is a friend of my db 63 years old and the other is a second cousin in his 70’s. No one batted an eyelid back then nor now. It was just another name. Most people knew it as the masculine form of Vivienne.
Should be fine for a second name or if they’re still not sure then do as a pp suggested and go for the letter V as it would be cool and mysterious, but honestly growing up and hearing this name in use I don’t see a problem.
I live in Wales and if you compare it with some of the welsh names we have here it would be way down the list of names that would be ridiculed.

He’ll be bullied as soon as others at school find out. I wouldn’t give my child a name that they could be bullied for. I’d consider how you’ll feel if he comes home in tears one day due to the middle name you’ve given him. For those saying he won’t be bullied, ignore them, I worked in education for over 20 years, names are something kids get bullied for. If it’s not bullying it’ll be something his mates take the mick out of for years.

This reminds me of Chandler M Bing lol. No.

Ditto Young Ones! Beware - my ds’s middle name is Gabriel and he HATES it, never tells anyone, never uses it, and is quite embarrassed if anyone finds out, although he’s very lucky it’s not his first name 😂

Vivien is a boys name in France. It's lovely.

So is Sacha. And Andrea and Nicola are boy's names in Italy.

Different countries have different cultures.

Beware - my ds’s middle name is Gabriel and he HATES it, never tells anyone, never uses it, and is quite embarrassed if anyone finds out, although he’s very lucky it’s not his first name

You almost sound happy to have given him this - rather foreseeable - challenge in his life.

Tryingtobedifferent · 02/09/2023 14:37

I like it! I think it's a really cool middle name. Considering some of the god awful names there are around at the moment, this is lovely

watchingsmurfs · 02/09/2023 14:40

Immediately thought of The Young Ones.

I don't like Leslie as a boy's name, though. FWIW.

My grandad was called Leslie but nowadays its mostly a girl's name Lesley. I don't think he liked it particularly so none of his grandsons or grandaughters were named after him.

CardboardDolphin · 02/09/2023 20:55

It's a girls name to me. Is there another way to honour her memory like use a name she loved it your OH middle name or even maiden names can be good middle names?

CurlewKate · 02/09/2023 21:00

But if anybody comes on here wanting to call their daughter Noah or Jamie or Billie everyone says "such wonderful strong unisex names..."

Of course he won’t get bullied over a middle name! If you like it, go for it.

You clearly don’t work with kids…….

BillyNotQuiteNoMates · 02/09/2023 21:02

I like the name. I’ve known a few Vivians and a few Viviennes and as far as I know none of them got bullied over their names.
It’s a lovely idea

NotMeNoNo · 02/09/2023 21:13

It's a fairly unusual name and is well known to be a male name of the same generation of all the current popular grandad names like Stanley and Alfred. It's not like Chloe or Susan is being suggested. It's never been a top 100 name for either gender according to ONS.
