Vivian for a boy's middle name

I'm due a boy in November.

My partner suggested Vivian as a middle name. My mum died 9 year's ago and her name was Vivienne so would be a way of remembering her. I hadn't thought of it before he suggested it. It would be nice to use her name but would it be too odd?

I think it's nice as a middle name, not sure he'll thank you for it though. I used a family name as a third name .

It isn't at all. It's a unisex name. Go for it, OP; it's lovely.

Sometimes, you can genuinely and factually justify something, but it still doesn't make things go kindly with you in the society you have to live in.

Just like you could name your son Adolphe, purely because you're a massive music fan and want to pay tribute to Mr Sax, the inventor of the Saxophone... but I wouldn't...

Vivian is a boy's name. The feminine forms are Vivien and Vivienne.
The Young Ones character was Vyvyan.

I say go for it! The double standards are ridiculous as for most think it is ok to name a girl James or Cameron but heaven forbid a boy gets a name that nowadays is mostly used on girls. I love Vivian and think it would be a really nice choice for a boy and the meaning behind it would be precious as well❤️

Where I live in South Wales Vivian wouldn't be considered that odd as a male name. The name became popular because of the Vivian family of industrialists.

I think it's fine. Ninian would also work as it's sometimes considered a variant of the same name. But V is a really cool middle initial.

My grandfather was one of the South Wales Vivian generation too (thanks @Chersfrozenface ), I think it's a lovely and cool name.

The Vivians I know are of Welsh heritage. Definitely male.

I know a male Vivian (first name) he was never bullied for it. I think it sounds a lovely tribute to your mum and will done to your DH for suggesting it

I wouldn’t - he might be teased and that’s probably not what you mum would want. Wait until you have a daughter or find a different name that’s linked - a similar meaning or something?

Yes so are Evelyn and Meredith but I wouldn’t call my son those names either. Give the kid a chance!

@babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo , Vivian isn't unisex. It's like Francis. The feminine version is spelt differently. Meredith is a surname and I dislike it being used as a girl's name.

I quite like Vivien for a girl, but Vivian for a girl looks like the parents can't spell.

I would do it, I know a couple of men with it as a first name and think it’s fine, your mother would have loved it

Please don't do this. Kids are mean . My step brother had this as a middle name and his mates called him Viv all the time. He took it well but why give children a reason to bully. Wait until you have a girl to use it as a middle name.
