Thank you 🙏

But that can pronounced different ways!
I have come across girls who call themselves "May-uh" and girls who call themselves "My-uh"

Gaia is pronounced Guy-uh.

Velvetbee · 21/08/2023 01:34

Love it.

SpringIntoChaos · 21/08/2023 07:54

Beautiful, classic name, with an equally beautiful meaning ♥️

(Really not sure how some people get through life, if they are unable to work out how to pronounce a very classical, well established name! It's not like it's simply been made up!)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/08/2023 07:59

Lovely name from Classical mythology (not 'hippy dippy' Hmm). I've taught a few Gaias. Not that uncommon and not difficult to pronounce imo.

Beautiful, and congratulations.
I think if I bumped into you and baby Gaia, I might burst into tears though. It seems like such a painful, perfect reflection of Earth's vulnerability and precarious future.
What if we could give the planet the same care and love we give our babies?

...and I would swiftly move my baby away from you because that reaction is utterly weird.

EveSix · 21/08/2023 08:19

OK, Popcorn, maybe not literally cry, but for me, the name is definitely associated with James Lovelock's Gaia theory and Gaia as personification of Earth, so, given the state we currently find ourselves in, I'd feel somewhat choked to hear this name used for a baby. I'd assume it was a bold statement by activist parents.

My daughter is called Gaia. Obviously biased, but I think it’s a beautiful name. It’s also popular in Italy.

Where’s the “gay”? It’s neither spelled or pronounced like that.

A lot of people will say it as its spelt. Especially kids.

cyclamenqueen · 22/08/2023 13:53

But it’s not spelled Gay either . Gai is ‘guy’ because I is the second vowel. Anyway zi think it’s a lovely name although not as unusual as it used to be

TotalOverhaul · 22/08/2023 13:53

I love it. It means Mother Earth or Source of Creation or something similar. Very powerful gorgeous name. (I'm not a hippy Grin)

I love Gaia🥰 my favourite name. Those who find it hard to spell or pronounce, do you have trouble with other established names aswell......

Hazelnut9 · 22/08/2023 21:09

It think it’s really pretty.

I used to work with a Gaia and she did have to spell it out to people multiple times a day, but it only has 4 letters so not too much effort!

That sounds a bit snobby. I have taught for over 30 years and we have never had a Gaia in the school in all of that time.

I know the name because of James Lovelock and the Gaia theory but can easily see how people might not have come across it and wouldn't look down on anyone who is unfamiliar with the name.

The spelling doesn't match any common English spelling patterns so the pronunciation won't be intuitive for many people.

Perhaps some people are unfamiliar with the name Gaia. It's no big deal. Much like you're unfamiliar with the correct usage of an ellipsis. Not a massive deal.

RitzyMcFitzy · 23/08/2023 07:15

And then there's the spelling of 'as well'...

ammyy · 23/08/2023 09:44

Well I am not English speaking natively so my English spelling might not be perfect. But get butt hurt if you want regarding the name Gaia and my comment. I think it is a straightforward name since it only has one established pronunciation and spelling and is an old name from the Greek mythology.
