This has got me to wonder when did the name Mark first make an appearance on English soil? I don't seem to recall any mention of it in classic literary works, unlike other more conventional names.

It’s biblical innit, plus the Romans and the Marcus in the Arthurian legends

So well over a thousand years

Totally boring, beige, outmoded dad names and much prefer modern names over these sorts.

Couldn't disagree more. Mark/Marc could change your tyre, clear your gutters, do the heimlich manoeuvre while Alfie, Ollie and Mason faff about Googling

Who an earth is naming their new born babies Mark. Awful name. Sounds like Bark.

Marc sounds the same with a slightly wet spelling.
Marcus is slightly better but sounds like mucus. Out of all the wonderful names out there I struggle to comprehend how someone in this day and age thought 'yes, Mark! That's the one!'

What names would you suggest?

Love Marcus.

It’s refreshing to see these old classics coming back.

Mark is the one I like.
Mark Darcy comes to mind.

Please tell me the wonderful names you speak of. I must add them to my collection.

Sounds like bark? Well a lot of names "sound like" something don't they? Louis/pooey; Jade/spade; etc

VenusClapTrap · 20/08/2023 16:41

Marcus is a great name. I have a bit of a thing for names ending in ‘us’ though. Marius, Magnus, Julius, Darius etc. All lovely. Ds’s middle name is Antonius, and when his full name is called out it sounds very stately.

lljkk · 20/08/2023 16:47

I can't warm to Marcus. Mark is good.

floradora · 20/08/2023 16:50

Another vote for Marco

CottonPyjamas · 20/08/2023 16:51

I have a Mark. He didn't really suit it as a baby, but does now. He's a wonderful kid. Clever, kind, handsome, sporty, and loving.

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 20/08/2023 16:56

Marcus is nice.

Miriam44 · 22/08/2023 00:30

I agree

Miriam44 · 22/08/2023 00:31

I really like Mark, especially paired with Anthony.

caringcarer · 22/08/2023 00:46

I have a soft spot for Mark. My first boyfriends name.

Theoldwoman · 22/08/2023 01:46

Not much.

Marc is the nicer of the three.

Does your brother not look like this then @Marmite27

Not in my eyes Grin

RaininSummer · 23/08/2023 18:21

Gorgeous names

similarminimer · 23/08/2023 18:28

Magnus

AIstolemylunch · 23/08/2023 18:29

I like Marc better than Mark, feels a bit more modern.

cptartapp · 23/08/2023 18:41

Love Marcus.
You can't get more 'boring and beige' than Archie and Alfie.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/08/2023 22:06

Mark.
Also like Marcus.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 17/09/2023 08:20

I like Marc. I've got a friend called Marc. He was in Starbucks once and when he told them his name was 'Marc with a C' they did actually write Cark on his cup.

peaceinourtime · 17/09/2023 08:42

I’m not a fan of this set of names but Marc with a c is the best of the lot.
