Due little girl April 2024

Always had a soft spot for the name.

I understand it's following the 'old granny' comeback trend.

(I may be thinking too deeply but can see this name becoming more popular soon due to new Barbie film)

Thoughts please? TIA

David Mitchell and Victoria Coren Mitchell's daughter is a Barbara I think.

toastofthetown · 04/08/2023 20:33

David and Victoria Coren Mitchell have a young Barbara. I actually find Barbara quite charming, but I think it needs a bit more time and for the current vowel heavy, soft consonant trend to pass before it will have mass appeal again. Barbara has a very different appeal to Ivy and Mabel. None of the diminutives are particularly appealing to me either (Babs, Barb, Bar, Barbie).

I can’t see Barbie really kicking starting a trend of Barbara. Barbie is so well known as a brand, it almost feels different to Barbara Millicent Roberts the name. And as Barbie is such a huge (and somewhat controversial) brand, I think a lot of parents will want to avoid that.

Definitely no I'm afraid. Sorry!

Thanks for replies. Also, please don't think I'm crazy, haven't actually had my gender scan but we're absolutely convinced it's a girl. (We have a boys name it's just girls name we're stuck on)

No

SidekickSylvia · 04/08/2023 20:59

Do the Coren Mitchell's also have a Betsy, or have I imagined that?

Barbara's a lovely name, but I think it'll be quite popular this year.

user2468101214 · 04/08/2023 21:01

Yes, I was thinking the same

Ahh my nan was a Barbara.
It's a fab name.
She hated Barbie, she was a Barbs.
Strong woman.

Nocturnaradish · 04/08/2023 21:08

I think you would be ahead of the curve. It’ll feel fresh soon enough, when baby namers are looking to move away from the current vowel heavy trend. So people may assume your daughter to be younger than her years, and her name will feel cooler for longer.

I’m not sure how I feel about the name, I certainly prefer it to many of the more currently popular choices. I’d like to meet a little girl named Barbara, and I’d admire the parents for making a fairly brave choice.

Chevrotains · 04/08/2023 21:26

I think it's awful

CremeEggThief · 04/08/2023 21:30

I like it, but it's a name that was still in use, when I was growing up in Ireland in the 80s and 90s. There were 2 in my school year and I had a young neighbour born in the late 80s named it.

ImGoingThroughChanges · 04/08/2023 21:31

I like it!

Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets · 04/08/2023 21:33

Omg no... Just no..

WanderingWitches · 04/08/2023 21:35

I think it's cute!

SemperIdem · 04/08/2023 21:37

One of my own grandmothers was Barbara, when I was pregnant with my daughter she was very clear about how awful she thought her name was and that I wasn’t to get any ideas about giving her name to the baby 😅

And really, my love for my grandmother aside, it’s not a great name.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 04/08/2023 21:38

I love it! I have a lovely Auntie Barbara! Think it will be coming back around.

NancyJoan · 04/08/2023 21:38

It is my cat’s name. She is lovely!

FearTheWankingDead · 04/08/2023 21:38

Love it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/08/2023 21:39

I like it, and I know a very cute little Barbara. Her parents are Polish and apparently it's more popular there.

Dombasle · 04/08/2023 21:40

Bar Bar Bar

Dombasle · 04/08/2023 21:41

My SIL was a Jaqueline. She hated the name. She made me promise not to give her name to any future daughters before she sadly died too young of cancer.

Tricky one to explain to MIL when I went on to have 2 girls and didn't use the name.

Lifeinlists · 04/08/2023 21:43

No, though it's better than the Olives and Ivys de nos jours.

JellyBeanFactory · 04/08/2023 21:44

I quite like it and due for a comeback - nickname Bea.

needlesandhaystacks · 04/08/2023 21:44

Every Barbara I've ever known has been a strong, feisty woman. I think it's that kind of name!
