Hi,
We love the name Marley for our little boy due later this year.
Aware Marley & me was a popular film years ago where Marley was a dog so people may think it is a dog name.
We love it especially as we love softer names but great to get some opinions!!
Any thoughts on this name? ☺️
Thank you

It seems to be popular for dogs, and it's more used as a boy's name than a a girl's. It makes me think of floor tiles.

It would be for a little boy☺️ thank you x

It's always reminded me of Jacob Marley in A Christmas Carol - he's the first ghost Scrooge sees.

But I do know a grown-up Marley, dad to two kids, so I suppose you get used to it on a particular individual.

@reporting4 , the thread title is "Marley - boy's name ". Even I couldn't miss that.
You asked what people would think. I think dog's name, unisex name, floor tiles, Bob Marley, Scrooge/Dickens.

Theoldwoman · 03/08/2023 12:58

It’s quite popular in NZ, mostly for boys but know of some girls with the name too.

Thankyou! I do agree you sort of associate a name with someone once you know that person

Isn't Joe Wicks' little boy called Marley? I think it's lovely and not at all weird or a dog name

I taught a Marley. He was one of those gorgeous cheeky kids that had a spark! So I love it

Not keen personally.

HeyYouWithTheSadFace · 03/08/2023 16:35

I'm in east of Scotland, I know 4 Marleys and they're all girls.

continentallentil · 03/08/2023 23:31

I know one now about 20, so I think of it as a fashionable north london noughties name, because that’s his background

it’s oK.

His best mates are Rafferty and Finley which I’d put in the same category

I know one female Marley.
Marley is fine for a boy because of Bob Marley.

Do you like Malcolm, Emanuel, Nash, Gage, Jamal or Osher?

Xcv · 04/08/2023 04:56

I love it, my nephew is Marloe and I think it’s lovely too

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/08/2023 05:04

I know 3 Marleys, all women nice name though

Chevrotains · 04/08/2023 08:20

I like Marley! I think it's cute. It's definitely more popular for pets, but I think it's lovely for a little boy

Daphnis156 · 04/08/2023 23:35

I wouldn't want it as a name.
Reminds me of a builders' merchant, or cement.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 05/08/2023 01:18

Marley and Me is a film about a dog dying. 80% of people will think of a dead dog. The other 20% will think of reggae music.

gillefc82 · 05/08/2023 02:18

An ex fiancé of mine had a little boy from a previous relationship and he was named Marley. He said he came up with it when looking at the sky one day and the clouds looked all marbley, which morphed onto Marley.

it was certainly cute on a young baby, but with any name I’d go through the life phases mentally and see if you think it would work when they’re a teen, when they are working in their 30s and when they are retired and 70/80. If you don’t immediately react that it may cause embarrassment or seem inappropriate or clunky, then go for it!

Malcolm?! Please no! A baby called Malcolm....poor kid.

I do like Marley. Mostly it makes me think of Bob Marley. But it is quite nice as a name.

MamaMiaOhDear · 05/08/2023 07:26

I think Marley is a lovely name
