I'm imagining you collating the scores and working out the average 🤔 but which... mode, mean...?

Summer2424 · 31/07/2023 11:20

Hi @belloftheballoon my favs are, Nina, Eva, Anna and Elouise x

belloftheballoon · 31/07/2023 11:25

Oh dear, I fear I may have made a bit of a faux pas. It seems asking for individual scores on baby names may have been a tad foolish. My loved ones have already given their input, and now I'm curious about what the wider world thinks. So, feel free to just give your favourites, ty.

Celeste - 6/10 I really like it but can’t see it without hearing ‘Hi I’m Daphne, and this is my friend Celeste’ in my head. I appreciate that this is probably a very specific millennial reference that won’t bother most people though 😂
Nina - 7/10 It’s lovely but I wonder if it works better as a nickname for something longer? Corinna? Janina? Evangelina?
Jasmine - 3/10 Too ‘Disney Princess’ IMO
Lucie/y - 7/10 pretty, classic, not massively exciting
Lily - 5/10 It’s nice enough, I just hear it A LOT, especially paired with May/Mai/Mae
Daisy - 6/10 really popular around here these days
Eva - 7/10 Nothing wrong with it at all, just not especially to my taste
Vivienne - 8/10 I think it’s great
Anna - 5/10 It’s fine
Juliet - 8/10 Classic without being common
Louisa 10/10 One of my favourites
Rosalind - 8/10 Prefer Rosalie or Rosaria but it’s lovely
Maria - 9/10 Feel like it’s due a resurgence
Scarlett - 6/10 Ok, just a bit ‘done’
Eloise - 8/10 Louisa is better!
Dahlia - 7/10 You’ll spend your life telling people if it’s DAY-lia or DAHR-lia.

I don't think simply giving scores out of ten is particularly helpful or constructive. If you are indeed going to work out the average of these scores as PP suggested, that's not a very effective way of narrowing your list down to the names you actually like best. So I'm going to give my opinion on each name instead.

Celeste - looks nice but a bit too "out there" for my liking.
Nina - not keen. Sounds whiny.
Jasmine - lovely, underused.
Lucie/y - very popular but beautiful. I think I actually prefer the Lucie spelling. I love Lucia too.
Lily - timeless, simple, beautiful.
Daisy - again, simple and pretty.
Eva - I prefer Eve, Evie or Evelyn.
Vivienne - not keen, too fussy.
Anna - lovely, a timeless classic.
Juliet - not keen, just not to my taste.
Louisa - not a fan but I love Eloise.
Rosalind - nope, too old-fashioned and frumpy for me. However I love Rosalie, Rosanna and Rosa.
Maria - nice, classic, underused these days.
Scarlett - quite popular but nice.
Eloise - as mentioned before, love this name.
Dahlia - not bad but will probably have issues with pronunciation.

Workawayxx · 31/07/2023 11:34

Celeste, jasmine, Juliet and Louisa are my favourites (so much so my dd is called one of those!).

PossiblyNotOne · 31/07/2023 11:58

Lily is nice but sooooo popular it’s become dull. Especially as every Lily is a Lily-Rose Lily May, Lily Grace.

Eva is the same, really lovely but hundreds of them, and just blends in with the millions of Evies, Avas, Ivys and Evelyn’s (who are all known as Evie). Again all paired with Rose/May/Grace with the is generic middle name for girls currently.

I like Anna and Jasmine and Louisa.

Might seem biased as my favourite is Lily for obvious reasons. Sorry

This is the name of my imaginary DD2!

Katiesaidthat · 31/07/2023 12:38

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/07/2023 12:58

I love Louisa and Eloise so I would happily use one of those

DuchessOfSausage · 31/07/2023 13:16

OK:
Rosalind - a bit long but nice. I like Ros as a shortening. don't like Rosalie etc
Anna - great
Maria - nice, works anywhere, also like Mary, a bit religious
Lucy - fine

Anna or Lucy with Rosalind as a middle name

Nice but wouldn't pick
Louisa - nice, a bit long, not keen on Lou
Nina - nice enough
Jasmine - ok

OK but wouldn't pick:
Vivienne - prefer Vivien is, not keen on Viv. Some might say it as Vivvy-EN so no.
Eloise - too much of a mouthful, yet another Ellie
Lily - overused
Daisy - a bit twee
Scarlett - too Gone with the Wind
Juliet - lovely but people saying Julie-ETTE puts me off

No:
Celeste - Marie-Celeste
Dahlia - two pronunciations
Eva - Eve is so much nicer
Lucie - twee spelling

Lilyoverthevalley · 31/07/2023 13:57

Celeste- lovely but a bit hippy for me- 7
Nina- not keen but maybe because I knew a Nina I didn't like very much- 2
Jasmine- don't love the Disney princess feel- 3
Lucie/y - don't love, a bit 90s- 3
Lily - love, very common now but don't necessarily let it put you off- 8
Daisy - prefer other flower names (Violet, Iris)- 6
Eva - immediately made me think Braun- 2
Vivienne - immediately made me think Pretty Woman- 1
Anna - love, classic and underused- 9
Juliet - also love- 9
Louisa- a bit 90's- 5
Rosalind - love this, sounds so pretty- 8
Maria- pretty name, a little boring- 6
Scarlett- makes me think scarlet woman- 2
Eloise- pretty but it gives me a geeky vibe, not sure why- 5
Dahlia- makes me think of the black dahlia- 2

Sorry if I've been harsh about some names. Some I've said I don't like because they put negative thoughts into my head (e.g. black dahlia) but if I actually knew someone called Dahlia the next time I heard the name I would think of them instead of the negative association, I just don't happen to know anyone with these names.

These are the best ones:
Eloise
Juliet
Jasmine
Vivienne

all your names are quite lovely except Celeste and Dahlia oh and Nina and Daisy aren’t great either

Vetoncall · 31/07/2023 16:12

Celeste - no, I think 'Marie' or 'Daphne and'
Nina - OK
Jasmine - OK, bit too Disney
Lucie/y - I absolutely hate the sound of this name but that's just a personal thing 😄 reminds me of 'juicy'
Lily - overused
Daisy - creepy perfume advert
Eva - like this but prefer Eve
Vivienne - Pretty Woman, 'Viv' is awful
Anna - best one IMO
Juliet - nice
Louisa - OK, bit meh
Rosalind - OK
Maria - OK, bit meh
Scarlett - no
Eloise - OK but prefer Eleanor, Elena or Elin
Dahlia - no, I think of the Black Dahlia and it's just not a nice sound

I'd go with Anna, Eve or something like Eleanor/Elena/Elin.
