Really like both

Florence- beautiful name, no keen on the nn Flo

Francesca- sounds very poetic to my ears. Dated?

I prefer Francesca. I like fran, frankie and cesca as shortenings and I like the full version.

Florence sounds nice enough but i'm not flo or a floss fan which i hear as shortenings.

WanderingWitches · 28/07/2023 09:53

I prefer the sound of Florence but also not keen on Flo.

heathspeedwell · 28/07/2023 09:56

This makes me so happy because it's both of my grandmother's names.

I think Francesca is more beautiful, but I may be biased because my grandma Francesca was such a spectacular human being!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 28/07/2023 10:00

Prefer Francesca but both nice choices

DustyLee123 · 28/07/2023 10:01

I prefer Francesca.

Reugny · 28/07/2023 10:02

I know lots of girls under 10 called Florence yet none called Francesca.

The adult women I know/knew who are called Francesca have a variety of nicknames.

Lifeinlists · 28/07/2023 10:13

Francesca. Not so keen on Frankie though.

shoopshoopdedoo · 28/07/2023 12:32

Florence! Francesca is lovely too but just a bit too frilly for my taste.

continentallentil · 28/07/2023 12:49

Francesca

It’s much more sophisticated than Florence, I’d far rather be called it as a adult. Definitely not dated - it’s becoming quite popular now along with Frances, but not overused.

It’s not too long to use as is, but has a great variety of nns, I like the old fashioned Franca - but also Chesca, Chessie, Frankie and Francie

PossiblyNotOne · 28/07/2023 13:10

Francesca, because at one point every baby girl I knew was a Florence so it just feels overused.

Sugarplumfury · 28/07/2023 13:24

Francesca is my favourite girls name ever.

nopainnogain1 · 28/07/2023 13:27

I have a Francesca who's now 12, so obviously I love it.

ourflagmeansdeath · 28/07/2023 13:31

They're both really, really beautiful and I have a Francesca who is nearly 6 so obviously biased but still. Florence is really pretty too though and I also dislike the nickname Flo but I not lots of Florence's and none of them go by it because it isn't an obvious sounding nickname. So that wouldn't be a worry.

Meredusoleil · 28/07/2023 13:39

I like both, but Francesca slightly more.

CaptainWarbeck · 28/07/2023 13:40

I think Francesca is a classic, not dated

ohsuzannah · 28/07/2023 14:05

I love Francesca!

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 28/07/2023 14:46

Francesca (as long as she's not a "Frankie")!

DuchessOfSausage · 28/07/2023 15:03

Prefer Flora and Frances.

pinkfrog55 · 28/07/2023 15:25

Francesca! Less popular and some great nn options (particularly like Cheska)

DramaAlpaca · 28/07/2023 15:28

Florence, by about a million miles.

Pemba · 28/07/2023 17:07

I find Francesca a beautiful and sophisticated name. Florence not so much.

My first association is the character in 'The Magic Roundabout' (showing my age there!), then Florence Nightingale. Then Florence and the Machine I suppose. It has a Victorian vibe. Actually not keen on names ending in the 'ence' sound in general, eg Constance, Hortense, Prudence. It's a bit stodgy.

Midgely23 · 28/07/2023 19:17

Francesca with the nn Franca is my imaginary daughters name

I have 3 boys, the last being the boy version of Francesca as I knew I was done having children and would never get to use the name Francesca

cptartapp · 28/07/2023 19:24

Francesca is much nicer.
Florence seems a bit wet.

Roselilly36 · 28/07/2023 19:27

Francesca is a gorgeous name, always liked it.

Wishitsnows · 28/07/2023 19:30

Is Florence a dog in an old kids tv show? I don’t really like it, not a strong name and the nn Fli isn’t great.
