What are the opinions on Brooks for a boy?

Other names on our shortlist are Miles and Beau.

Miles gets my vote.
Brooks, unusual but familier comes a close second..
Beau is fine.

StopFeckingFaffing · 16/07/2023 09:08

Brooks with an S on end I would assume was a surname

Brook/Brooke I would expect to be a girl

I would go with Miles

PickledScrump · 16/07/2023 09:13

Brooke is primarily used as a girls name so you will likely have a lot of assumptions that it is a girl.

of your choices I’d go with Miles. Bryce also popped in my head as a similar vein

N0ëlle · 16/07/2023 09:17

I would go with Miles too.
Beau is ok, but it will date so badly. There were no Beaus before 2005. It will be Garry or Wayne one day.

Brooks sounds a bit confusing because I hear it as Brooke's (possessions).

What about Bruce? prefer that. Instead of Beau what about Blair?

Frogmila · 16/07/2023 09:27

Is there a reason for liking Brooks such as it being your maiden name or you're a huge fan of Garth?

No offence to any with the name but if not, it's just a bit of a boring surname with a simple geographical meaning. Not nice enough to justify the repeated 'no, it's Brooks with an 's''. Not the end of the world but I can't really see the appeal in and of itself.

Beau will date quickly and Miles is a bit wet but the best of the three.

afrenchmum · 16/07/2023 09:33

I just like the sound of Brooks I think. Feel like it’s a strong name but possibly a bit American. Not that that’s a bad thing, but surname names can sometimes come with negative connotations especially on here.

Miles has been a front runner throughout most of the pregnancy. Beau is my favourite for a little boy but not sure how it will feel when he grows up.

*Roman and Jude are another two I really like!

Jongleterre · 16/07/2023 09:49

I like Miles and Jude.

I know a Beau and he's over 50!

Brooks is too much like a surname or a Nick name.

Brook is ok.

I used to love Roman but that horrible little twat on the radio has sullied the name.

Frogmila · 16/07/2023 09:52

Jude and Roman are great names

SoSoSoSo · 16/07/2023 11:19

I love Brooks.

KirstenBlest · 16/07/2023 11:28

Brook is not too bad but I'd think it was a girl. Brooks is too out there
I like Miles. Beau is dreadful. Not keen on Jude or Roman but they're not awful.

MerryMarigold · 16/07/2023 14:36

Are you in Essex? 😁Brooks is a bit made up. I think I'd Hmm if a child turned up where I work with that name! I know a Jax, you may like that. I know a Beau, sib is Harley. I really like Miles though, it's somehow classic and modern.

Dalekjastninerels · 16/07/2023 16:20

Brooks; meh to no (maybe Brooke would be better? (Rainy Night in Georgia)

Miles; yes

Beau:meh to yes (from GWTW- his name was actually Beauregard; Beau was his short for name)

I would pick Miles out of the three. (Yes from the boy in Turn of The Screw; but it is best of)

megletthesecond · 16/07/2023 16:22

No. Brooks is a brand of running trainers.

Heurgh · 16/07/2023 16:29

They're very golfer names.

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/07/2023 16:34

Showing my age but I'm sure these were all characters in Dynasty.

beachsandseaicecream · 16/07/2023 16:39

Brooks make some think of the golfer Brooks Koepka. Personally I don't like it. Agree about surname sounding names as first names.

Miles would be my choice, my a long way.

Twizbe · 16/07/2023 16:42

Brooks makes me think of the Real Housewives of Orange County. One of the women was with a man called Brooks who seemed to be a liar and abusive POS.

Beau is soooooo common at the moment. I know several under 5.

Holdontowhat · 16/07/2023 16:45

Have you watched Shawshank Redemption? Great film but the name reminds me of a character from that

mathanxiety · 16/07/2023 16:51

Brooks reminds me of big 80s glasses for some reason. It seems dated. It has a harsh, clunky sound imo. I can't imagine looking at a little baby in a Moses basket and in my mind calling him Brooks, just as I can't imagine a baby girl named Sharon.

I like Miles, Jude, and Roman far more.

Dalekjastninerels · 16/07/2023 17:01

Jude and Roman are a yes from me.

I think babies should be named with at least one traditional name ; so if you like a name that is unusual/bogan , baby has a name that fits in anywhere.

Huge bugbear of mine is short names as names; in my mind Alfie's name is Alfred etc.

I would go with Miles Roman.

SpringIntoChaos · 16/07/2023 18:30

Brooks - is a no from me OP, sorry 🤷‍♀️ Too American for my taste...and it's a surname, which I dislike as a first name.

Miles is nice enough though and I love Jude.

Really don't like Roman though...so overused now! And Beau is a poodle name in my mind, so no 🤦‍♀️

Icecreamsundayz · 16/07/2023 19:53

Really like miles too but I love brooks! So unusual as well

garlictwist · 16/07/2023 20:00

It's a well known brand of bicycle saddle. It also sounds vaguely plural or possessive.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2023 20:04

Roman is nice but do you have any Polish roots? It's everywhere now because of that heritage (my GD's name!).

Miles is the best of yours. Brooks is not great.
