How would you pronounce Lena? I love it, but concerned there are too many ways people might say it. Thanks!

NotTheOtherMother · 16/07/2023 08:35

I had an Aunty Lena. She pronounced it LEE-na

golddustwomen · 16/07/2023 08:35

Lee-na. Absolutely love this, it's beautiful.

Horriblewoman · 16/07/2023 08:37

I’d pronounce it leer-nah which a slightly inflection on the second e sound but I have Scandinavian routes

Shylo · 16/07/2023 08:37

Lee-na ….. love it!

YallaYallaaa · 16/07/2023 08:38

I know a LEE-na and a LAY-na spelled like that.

Zola1 · 16/07/2023 08:39

Leen-ah

AutumnNymph · 16/07/2023 08:39

Lee-na. Love the name!

YourNameGoesHere · 16/07/2023 08:39

Lee-na but I've met more than one called Len-A.

N0ëlle · 16/07/2023 08:40

I'd say Leena but I think it's a common name in Germany /Scandinavia and they might say layna?

I prefer the sound of Layna

LadyWithLapdog · 16/07/2023 08:41

Leh-nah
I wouldn’t worry about pronunciation, once they hear your preference people will get it right. How do you want it?

Tiredjoanna · 16/07/2023 08:41

Layna because Lena just makes me think Selena

GoodVibesHere · 16/07/2023 08:44

I'd pronounce it Lee-nah. It's lovely - very pretty, but also strong and not twee.

You could spell it Leena, or Lina.

I'd be tempted to have a fuller name, using Lina as the short version, e.g. Rosalina.

atthebottomofthehill · 16/07/2023 08:46

LAY-na

Like Elena which is e - lay - na

Definitely not lee-na.

user1492757084 · 16/07/2023 09:02

Lena = Layna - as in Lois Lane and Magdalena

PickledScrump · 16/07/2023 09:09

Lee-na. Also known it to be Len-a, I can’t see how it could be Lay-na at all.

SallyWD · 16/07/2023 09:38

I'd say Lee-na. It's a really lovely name.

LooseInTheCity · 16/07/2023 09:39

The one I know is Len-a not Leena. It’s pretty.

abyssofwoah · 16/07/2023 09:42

I’d pronounce it Lay-na.

StillWantingADog · 16/07/2023 09:44

atthebottomofthehill · 16/07/2023 08:46

LAY-na

Like Elena which is e - lay - na

Definitely not lee-na.

While I would say LAY-na

all the Elena’s round here are ELL-eh-na

trevthecat · 16/07/2023 09:47

My cousin is called Lena, is Italian and lives in Italy. Hers is pronounced lin ah

scarceiron · 16/07/2023 10:08

@GoodVibesHere I love the Lina spelling and hadn’t thought of it being short for a longer name, great suggestion!

Thanks everyone, I definitely wasn’t expecting this many responses 🙂 I’m a Welsh speaker and think my family would say it like ‘L-air-na’ (a bit like the German/Scandi pronunciation?) or Le(as in hen)-na. I also really like the Leena pronunciation (and a Lina spelling would work really well in Welsh to say it like this). Slightly less keen on the ‘Layna’ version, but that’s just me. Yes, I’ve been massively overthinking this!

@scarceiron , the ones i know are Welsh and say it as Lenna.

Whatisityoucantface · 16/07/2023 16:31

I know a Polish Lena and it’s Len-ah
I think my default pronunciation would be Lee-nah however

QueenCoconut · 16/07/2023 16:58

Slavic version is pronounced Len-ah, short from Helena.
