How would you pronounce Lena? I love it, but concerned there are too many ways people might say it. Thanks!

I think I’d say Lee-na, or maybe Lay-na. I know one who is pronounced Len-ah too.

I think it’s a lovely name, however it’s said.
Lina is probably a more obvious way to get Lee-na without the risk of mispronunciation; however, I’m sure people would cope with how to say it after being corrected once!

I’d pronounce it leer-nah which a slightly inflection on the second e sound but I have Scandinavian routes

Like this, for the same reason.

continentallentil · 16/07/2023 22:06

Lee-nuh

MyNameIsLena · 16/07/2023 22:13

It's my name (a shortening though rather than on my birth certificate), and I pronounce it Lee-na. I'd say that most people pronounce it as I do, though I guess it's a bit different to it being my full name as most people who say it will have met me in person and heard how I say it rather than reading it.

peaceinourtime · 17/07/2023 05:24

Lena is nice. I've known one pronounced lean-a.

Enko · 17/07/2023 08:01

N0ëlle · 16/07/2023 08:40

I'd say Leena but I think it's a common name in Germany /Scandinavia and they might say layna?

I prefer the sound of Layna

Scandinavian would pronounce the "e" sound. But worth noting e is spoken differently in Scandinavian languages to English languages.

The 3 Lenas I know (I am scandinavian abd they are all in their 50s) pronounce it Le- nah. (With the e being spoken the Scandinavian way)

Enko · 17/07/2023 08:04

Forgot to say op it's a really nice name however you pronounce it.

@Enko , the Scandinavian way doesn't really tell us how they say it. Do they say Ley-na, Lee-na, Leh-na, or something else?

I did explain that in the post they say it Le-nah

You can find out the exact way by listening to these as the "e" sound is slightly different in each Scandinavian language (I could not find Islandic or Greenlandic or Faroese pronunciations)
Danish
Swedish
Norweigian
Finnish

The way that the English tongue goes they do not turn their e's the way the Scandinavian does. A bit like OP saying that for them it would be said L-air-na Most British English people would not turn their tongue that way but for Welsh pronunciation, it's easy to do 😀
I've lived in the UK for 32 years these days I mostly get asked if I am South African. I am fluent in English but certain letters I will never say the way that the British does and certain letters a Native English speaker will never say in the way the Scandinavian does.

@Enko , but Le-nah doesn't tell me if they say Leena, Ley-na. Leh-na, Lair-na or something else.
The Danish one to me sounds like Leeneh, the Norwegian and Swedish sound like Lee-enah, Finnish like Len-ah, and the Icelandic like lair-na.
FWIW the online translator says the English version is Leena and the German version Layna

I don't agree with you on the Danish pronunciation.

sorry you didn't get the Le Nah it works for me. I do not feel leena leyna or lehna shows you how it is said in the Scandinavian languages so I shall stick with Le nah.

Again it has to do with how it is said.

KirstenBlest · 18/07/2023 10:23

@Enko , I've relistened to the Danish one and to me it sounds like ley-neh.
I suspect that someone with the name will get different pronunciations.

trainconundrum · 18/07/2023 10:28

In Maeve Binchy’s the glass lake the protagonist is called lena short for helena and it took me ages to work out they were pronouncing it Layna as in Ireland some/all/many people would say Hel-LAY-na, whereas in England the two peoplei know called that would say HEL-en-ah.

I think helena/elena pronunciation debate rages across many countries tbh!

It comes back to how the Danish e is said it's actually closer to the British I in many cases but in the case of Lena it's not. I disagree it's Ley or because it doesn't have the softness of the y and I disagree it's Lee as in the UK that's more ee heavy and the "e" in Danish simply is not. I don't like the Leh as the Brits overpronounce the "h" compared to how the Danish say it. So the ehhhh sound is wrong.

But you believe it's what you want to do. I'm not going to get into a heavy debate over this I will stick with my original comment that the way the e is said in Scandinavia is different to how it is in the UK. Followed up with my later comment that some pronunciations simply do not happen to non-native speakers.

erint09 · 18/07/2023 12:30

I would say leh-nah like Lena Tindall.

WaltzingWaters · 18/07/2023 12:34

I knew a Lena in Greece - pronounced - leh na. it’s a beautiful name.

never would have thought Lee na as most have suggested unless it was spelled Lina.

CallieQ · 18/07/2023 12:43

Not keen

Go for Leah

Hazelnuttella · 18/07/2023 12:45

The one I know is pronounced Leena.

It's my full name. In Ireland most people would say Hel-ee-na, whereas in England Helen-uh is more common, but the Hel-ay-na pronunciation also exists.

RovenderKitt · 18/07/2023 17:31

It’s my middle name. Lee-na

I'm in Ireland and as a pp said Helena is mostly said Hel-EE-na here and Lena is Lee-na. At least I've never heard them said otherwise.
Elena is El-ay-na though ime.

JamSandle · 18/07/2023 21:21

Len-na

EllaMenopee · 18/07/2023 21:36

My family has the most gorgeous Lee-na. Occasionally someone pronounces it differently (many examples above) and the only one that irks her is Len-ah as she doesn't want to be confused for a 75 year old bitter drinker.

CardiffMam · 18/07/2023 21:41

I know a young girl called Lena and an older lady who is called Lena, short for Elena. Both said in the Welsh way "Lenna".
Lovely name.

Whichwhatnow · 18/07/2023 21:48

I have only ever known one Lena and she pronounced it Leh-nah. She was South African though if that makes any difference! I would have assumed Lee- nah prior to that. I know a Layna as well (pronounced as written) so wouldn't have thought that Lena was pronounced that way personally.
