Lily?

Hi all. I’m expecting a baby girl next month.

My partner loves the name Lily - I wasn’t keen at first as it’s so popular/sounds infantile and a bit drippy to me (just my opinion). Also I didn’t want her to be one of 20 Lily’s at school, I wanted something classic and not too popular.

However I’m warming to Lily and have found myself referring to her myself by this name. Would you just go with Lily? Middle name would be Gladys (don’t judge pls) after my lovely Nana.

The other names I love are Isabel and Zoe.

any thoughts/comments appreciated

Go for Gladys as a first name! It’s cool!! And you could call her dizzy (dissy) for short.

Zoe is also great.

orangeflags · 05/07/2023 21:08

Gladys is wonderful

Babyroobs · 05/07/2023 21:11

I think Lily is a lovely name, not drippy just a classic name although admittedly there are a few around. I like it spelt the traditional way not variations like Lilly, lillie, Lillie-mai etc !

Babyname12345 · 05/07/2023 21:23

Lily is a great name and I love Zoe!

CharlotteFlax · 05/07/2023 21:37

Lily IS a nice name (I've got one!) but I reckon Zoe Gladys is even better!

PickledScrump · 05/07/2023 21:41

Lily Gladys is lovely. People always say it’s really common but my daughter is in secondary school now and only has a Lily-may in her year and only come across one other Lily in all the classes, clubs, parties etc we’ve been to over the years, so I don’t think it’s actually that popular. I have an Isabelle and although I absolutely love her name she’s one of 4 in her year group.

Im not a fan of Zoe and it doesn’t work well with Gladys

Same with my daughter. Only 2 of them in her school year !

Lillian Gladys.

PixellatedPixie · 05/07/2023 21:47

Lily is beautiful and I don’t find it to be overused at all. It’s classic as it’s a flower! 😍

TinyKittenPaw · 05/07/2023 21:49

Lily is beautiful, i just think of a gorgeous classic flower not drippy.

Maddy70 · 05/07/2023 21:49

Love it ❤️

TheaBrandt · 05/07/2023 21:50

Really dull sorry. Lily / Eve / Grace any Isabel name are soooooo common. They are the Sarah / Claire / Rachel equivalent. Pick her something more special. Zoe is lovely. Anything but the tedious top 10.

99redballoons123 · 05/07/2023 21:52

Gladys is a wonderful name!
I'm sorry but lily is just so common now - it's everywhere. There are a 6 in my nieces dance class including her. Every other child seems to be called lily or lily-rose.

mauvish · 05/07/2023 21:52

Not Gladys as a first name, please (i'm begging on behalf of your child here!)

Lily is lovely but I'd probably go the whole hog with Lilian, Lilianne or even Lilianna, Lily for short.

FirstFallopians · 05/07/2023 21:53

All the Lily’s I know (4, and I’m don’t have a huge social circle) are 3 and under.

There’s going to be an explosion of Lily’s in reception over the next 2/3 years.

It’s a nice name, and obviously lots of other parents think so too, but it’s very very popular.

pavillion1 · 05/07/2023 22:07

Ive got a Lily , Shes nearly 11 now 😬. My only regret is that we didnt go With Lilian on the birth certificate as i think when she hits her late forties onwards it'll be more sophisticated, i was to young to think further ahead .

RuthW · 05/07/2023 22:10

Gladys is much nicer than boring Lily

Cookiemonster321 · 05/07/2023 22:14

Thanks everyone for the comments, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to make a decision! Dw I’d never inflict Gladys as a first name, I doubt she’d ever forgive me 😂 I do love Zoe but I don’t think it really goes with Gladys

I’ve been thinking of Lilian as an option, not mad about it but my great-grandma was a Lilian

I love Lily but I don’t think it goes with Gladys - sounds like gladioli gone wrong.

Zoe Gladys perhaps.

pavillion1 · 05/07/2023 22:24

No i wasnt either it was actually my MIL who suggested it and i laughed it off but now i think we should have gone with it because most names are shortened within the first year anyway .
Our lily normally goes by lil or lil's . Lilian in older years i think will be lovely .

Howtohideasausage · 05/07/2023 22:33

Zoe Lily Gladys.

MigAndMog · 05/07/2023 22:33

Lily is apparently now the most used name for girls so far in 2023. I'd use something else if that would bother you.

Irishmummy6363 · 07/07/2023 18:49

I adore Lily. It’s my favourite girls name, don’t care if it’s popular - it is popular for a reason! I only know lovely Lilys.

Dreamingofasandybeach · 07/07/2023 18:55

My sister is a Lily Eloise and it suits her perfectly. I just call her Lils 🤣😊
