Lily?

Hi all. I’m expecting a baby girl next month.

My partner loves the name Lily - I wasn’t keen at first as it’s so popular/sounds infantile and a bit drippy to me (just my opinion). Also I didn’t want her to be one of 20 Lily’s at school, I wanted something classic and not too popular.

However I’m warming to Lily and have found myself referring to her myself by this name. Would you just go with Lily? Middle name would be Gladys (don’t judge pls) after my lovely Nana.

The other names I love are Isabel and Zoe.

any thoughts/comments appreciated

I'm not loving Lily, but don't particularly dislike it either.
What would put me off is how many little girls have been named Lily over the past 8 years or so.

I wouldn't worry about the first and middle name "going together" as such. You don't say them together except at Christening (which you might not even have), wedding, and some graduation ceremonies (again, which they might not have), and, if Porridge is to be believed, if you are sentenced by a judge (which hopefully won't happen).
She would just introduce herself as 'Zoe' or 'Zoe Monster'. then, if someone asked about her middle name, she would separately say 'Gladys', after my great gran.

Oddly, I quite like Lilian.

Lily is pretty but it was just in the news that it is the most popular girls name in UK this year

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/07/2023 22:44

Lovely Lily is so pretty and is becoming a classic imo. I do also like lyrical sounding Lilia too, if that might be of interest? My personal hesitation in using Lily wasn't so much that it's very popular, but the spelling issues - for some reason the Lilly spelling seems nearly as popular where I am, which could be a pain.

I really adore elegant Isabel as well (this classic spelling) - but again Isabelle is so popular, it could be a hassle always having to spell her name. That leaves Zoe, but I've never been as keen on the sound - it's nowhere near as elegant or pretty as your other two options imo sorry.

Have you considered Claudia as a first name? I had a Grandmother Gladys too, and Claudia was on my list as a subtle way to honour her (I had a DS instead!) Claudia is thought to the Latin version of Gladys and much less dated imo (and so a better option for the first name spot, although nothing wrong with Gladys for a middle but you could then honour another relative there instead, maybe the other Grandmother?)

Zoe is fab! Zoe Gladys sounds lovely to me.

Workawayxx · 07/07/2023 22:51

Zoe is awesome 🤩 and Zoe Gladys is great. Also really like Lily, it’s just a bit more popular.

Zola1 · 07/07/2023 22:55

I love Lilia. My daughter is 13 and basically all her friends are either Lily or Olivia...and I think its remained just as popular

TashieWoo · 07/07/2023 23:02

I have a 14 month old Lilianna and she is Lili for short. I have met only one other Lily since having her but I’m not too bothered about the popularity as I love her name and the slightly different spelling. She is named after my grandmother whose middle name is Lillian and her middle names are also family names.

shoopshoopdedoo · 07/07/2023 23:56

I really like Zoe and Lily. Love Gladys as a middle name!

CallieQ · 08/07/2023 00:34

Zoe best

fairycupcakes · 08/07/2023 10:37

Zoe is a great name! Lily is cute but I prefer Lilian/ Liliana. Not keen on Isabelle, seems the most popular of the three and very frilly and all I ever hear with that name is “is a bell” just seems an odd name to me personally.

CharlieBoo · 08/07/2023 19:35

Lily is just so popular! It’s become bland and boring! I certainly wouldn’t call it a classic. Gladys is so cool, but not for a first name. I’d go Zoe, much more edgy and different.

Lily Gladys is sweet. It is the best Lily version.
I also love Zoe Gladys.

Purpleolive8 · 12/07/2023 19:29

I love Zoe! Much more interesting than Lily.

Maireas · 12/07/2023 19:32

Gladys is a great name. You'll be well ahead of the curve there.
Lily is nice, but very common. Lilian would be a more unusual version.

ColdHandsHotHead · 12/07/2023 22:47

Lilia.

peaceinourtime · 13/07/2023 01:17

Lily is a beautiful name, don't feel like you have to use a longer name like Lillian then instantly shorten it to get Lily. It's perfectly fine to use a stand alone name 😊

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 13/07/2023 01:31

My sister is called Lily , she loves her name. Even though I spend a lot of time with babies & young children, I actually don’t know another Lily only a toddler called Lillie May .
Im not keen on Zoe, it’s dated but not in a good way .
I would say wait until you see her & decide then . Hope all goes well 🌸

JenniferBarkley · 13/07/2023 01:44

Lily is nice, if a little unexciting. We have small children and I can instantly think of four, so too popular for me.

I prefer both Isabel and Zoë. Can't think of any little Isabels (of any spelling) and one little Zoë, so they're not as popular here.

elifont · 13/07/2023 02:03

Lily is very boring- but I like boring. Lila /lyla ? What about shortening Gladys to Ady? I love names after people but some need a bit of a change
