Lowri?

Currently my favourite out of my shortlist. Welsh name, though she'll be mostly English, living in England. Pronounced Low-ree (as in opposite of high). Thoughts?

Well it’s my name and I love it. I live in Wales but I have never had any issues with people getting it wrong in England. If anything it’s worse in Wales as I get low-ree (my actual pronounciation) and Lough-ree in equal measures.

Great but people will say it like the painter Lowry. (Lawri) . The ow is shorter than in the english word low.

How would you pronounce it?

I think it's lovely.

PickledScrump · 05/07/2023 15:52

It’ll probably get pronounced with an ow as in ouch unfortunately

Marblessolveeverything · 05/07/2023 16:11

I read it as sounding like lou -(rhymes with cow) ri.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 16:20

If you think of how you say Boa (Constrictor), you don't say Bow-ah, the Bo(w) is shorter than Bow, IYSWIM.

MrsCarson · 05/07/2023 16:39

I love it, there's a lady who lives by me who's name is Lowri. But we are in Wales.

StopFeckingFaffing · 05/07/2023 16:44

It's lovely

The only one I know (who lives in England but has a Welsh Mum) pronounces it the same as the artist L.S Lowry

First syllable rhyming with cow rather than low

Whataretheodds · 05/07/2023 16:46

I love it.

Yes many people will mispronounce it - not an issue, you correct them, they will learn, and she will learn it the right way, (opposite of high, as you say).

Don't be tempted to adapt to the 'wrong' pronunciation because you're in England.

crowgift · 05/07/2023 16:57

Oh that's a lovely name.

shoopshoopdedoo · 05/07/2023 17:14

I like it! Would be inclined to say Low to rhyme with cow, but wouldn’t be an issue after you’d corrected me!

CaffiSaliMali · 05/07/2023 18:12

I know a Lowri in England and it frequently gets mispronounced to rhyme with dowry. I.e. people rhyme the Low part with cow.

The Low part is pronounced like 'Lo' (as in lo and behold').

Otherwise it's a nice name, is Welsh for Laura.

CaffiSaliMali · 05/07/2023 18:14

Exactly this pronunciation!

WingingIt101 · 05/07/2023 18:16

It's beautiful but I did read it as rhyming with cow rather than oh for the low part.

I love it though both ways!

Jongleterre · 05/07/2023 19:07

It's a beautiful name.

Coronationstation · 05/07/2023 19:41

I’d pronounce as per the painter but I’d pronounce that Low-ree with the low to rhyme with cow and how. I don’t like it as a first name though and Lowri pronounced as in high n low is even worse for nthink.

All I think of is 'matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs sorry...' @Summerpeachblossom

To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs!

Now canvas and brushes were wearing thin when London started calling him - to come on down and wear the old flat cap...... (Sorry @Summerpeachblossom !!!) Blush

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 21:11

@Summerpeachblossom , I'd pick something else. At best, she'll get the anglicised Low-Ree after correcting the (LS) Lowry pronunciation, and possibly some people thinking it's hilarious to sing a 1970s pop song.

beeskipa · 05/07/2023 21:20

I like it as a name but living in England she'll get it pronounced wrong constantly I think - depends if that bothers you. I know a Lowri and she pronounces it to rhyme with cow - I didn't actually know there was a different way!
