Currently my favourite out of my shortlist. Welsh name, though she'll be mostly English, living in England. Pronounced Low-ree (as in opposite of high). Thoughts?

It’s a lovely name
I know girls called both Lowri and Lawri
Lowri pronounced like low
Lawri to rhyme with cow
Both pretty and user friendly names
And you have to explain once to people how your name is pronounced . It’s not hard.

Whoops! I've been pronouncing it completely wrong. 😳

"He painted kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs"

Same thought.

MerryMarigold · 05/07/2023 21:53

I think it's a lovely name. I instinctively said Low - ree when I knew it was a Welsh first name. I think of the artist as a totally different name.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 21:55

It is a lovely name. We have at least one on the thread.

KnickerlessParsons · 05/07/2023 22:09

I'm Welsh and when I say Lowri it rhymes with cow.

VeryUninspired · 05/07/2023 22:11

Makes me think of Bad Boys, Mike Lowry. That’s not necessarily a bad thing!

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 22:14

@KnickerlessParsons , if it was pronounced to rhyme with cow it would be Lawri.

KnickerlessParsons · 05/07/2023 22:16

That's not what all the Lowris I know would say.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 22:26

All of them? All the Owens say their names to thyme with Cow-en as well, I suppose.

peaceinourtime · 13/07/2023 07:44

I've never heard of it before, It's lovely 😊

SnazzyShambles · 13/07/2023 08:08

Lovely name, my sisters is spelt Lowrie

DemBonesDemBones · 13/07/2023 17:54

I always read this in my head as law (rhyming with bough) ree. I like it both ways to be honest!

KirstenBlest · 13/07/2023 17:58

@DemBonesDemBones , the 'ow' is the same as in Owen.

DemBonesDemBones · 13/07/2023 17:58

I see that now! Just saying I've always read it wrong!

Hankthehonk · 14/07/2023 15:18

Lovely name - here in Scotland I know a few people with the surname Lowrie pronounced to rhyme with dowry, so I'd probably get it wrong first time. Nice to learn the proper Welsh pronunciation

JustMaggie · 14/07/2023 15:35

There is a Lowri in DDs school. Unfortunately the kids all call her "Larry"

Ontopofthesunset · 14/07/2023 16:52

Is it a Welsh pronunciation for law and bough to rhyme? Bough rhymes with cow for me, and law has the same vowel sound as raw or paw or lore or shore.

I don't know the name, but would have pronounced it Low-ri like the painter, or the verb 'to lower at someone' (look sullen or threateningly) or the adjective 'lowery' meaning dark and thundery.

Ontopofthesunset · 14/07/2023 16:53

But of course once I was told how to pronounce it I would have no trouble doing an Anglicized version of it.

None of these. 'Low' as in 'not high'

Ontopofthesunset · 14/07/2023 16:59

Someone upthread said that 'law' rhymed with 'bough'. Not that this name did. And I was confused, because 'law' and 'bough' have completely different sounds to me. 'Bough' rhymes with 'cow'. 'Law' rhymes with 'raw' and 'pore' and 'poor'.

KirstenBlest · 14/07/2023 17:00

@Ontopofthesunset , the 'Low' part doesn't rhyme with Law or Bough.
If it rhymed with Bough, the name would be Lawri. You don't really get the 'ough' and 'aw' sounds in Welsh.

Ontopofthesunset · 14/07/2023 17:01

No, I don't. That's why I asked.

Low - ow like in Owen
ri like the ''ry' in Harry

KirstenBlest · 14/07/2023 17:08

@Ontopofthesunset , I say like in Owen, because the sound is shorter than in Low.

The same sort of thing applies to 'ei' in names like Eira/Meirion etc the Ei is shorter than the Ay sound.
