My DH can't agree on a name and baby girl is due soon, we've narrowed it down to two favourites each,
Mine: Lucy and Matilda
His: Isla and Evie

What do you think of these names?

I like Lucy and think its under used these days. I know a million Matildas, Islas and Evies. Especially Evie - really plays to that Eve/Evie/Eva/Ava trend. Personally that's the one I'd avoid.

Sunshine202341 · 30/06/2023 15:00

Out of those I like Lucy the best.

Matilda feels a little old fashioned to me. Isla I think they will always be explaining to people how to pronounce it - is it pronounced like Islay the Scottish island with a silent S?

Evie is ok but very popular right now!

DustyLee123 · 30/06/2023 15:02

Lucy is the least used that I know of, and it’s lovely.

Kingsparkle · 30/06/2023 15:02

I think Lucy is ready for a come back, it’s a nice name.

The others are also nice but very popular.

SBAM · 30/06/2023 15:03

Across infant school and nursery there are heaps of Isla/Aylas and similar names like Lila, also plenty of Eva/Ava/Evie’s so for me Matilda or Lucy are better. Personally I think Lucy is lovely.

vicaragechristmas · 30/06/2023 15:03

My favourites of those are Isla and Matilda, though I agree they’re both pretty popular. Does that matter to you? Really, all four are very attractive names. What sounds best with your surname? What sounds good with the middle name/s you’ve chosen? Sometimes I think, what would sound most professional when DC is an adult and making a career for themselves?

I have 4 neighbours with Lylas/Lilas within my small road. It’s like the Alex of my generation.

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 30/06/2023 15:05

All of the names are very popular.

Lucy is probably the best one. It's obviously a very well known name but I don't think I've met a baby Lucy in a while. There's certainly none in the preschool my son attends or any of the baby groups I go to with my younger children.

Isla and Evie I think are too "of the time" and will seem dated in years to come.

IggyAce · 30/06/2023 15:08

I work in a school and there are loads of Evie’s and Isla’s. There are a couple of Lucy’s and currently no Matilda’s.
My favourite from your lists is Matilda.

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/06/2023 15:10

100% Lucy

Matilda is ridiculously popular in my area in a 'door to death' way

Evie has been popular for a long time and blends in with all the similar names.

I've just never taken to Isla

FayCarew · 30/06/2023 15:11

Lucy - classic, know ones of different ages
Matilda - too long, not keen on Tilly or Tilda.
Isla - Isla, Lila ... overused
Evie - pretty but so many Evie/Eva/Aa/Ivy/Edie/Evelyn type names
I only like Lucy, the others seem too 'of the moment' and overused

CoffeeChocolateWine · 30/06/2023 15:17

Of your list, I've used one of your names and two very similar names for my two daughters! Yes they're popular, but it's because they're lovely names.

I'm not so keen on Lucy - it's a bit wet sounding to me.

My favourite is Matilda. It's the middle name of one of my DDs. The reason I didn't use it as a first name was because I didn't like some of the nn possibilities. Might not be an issue for you though.

AdaColeman · 30/06/2023 15:32

I like Lucy and Matilda very much, especially Matilda as it's got a long history, and also I like Tilda as a nn.

I'm not keen on Isla or Evie, Evie/Eve/Eva has been hugely popular very recently so there will be a lot of little Evies, also it sounds more like a nn than a full name to me.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 30/06/2023 15:33

All nice names. All pretty popular but that is what happens if you pick a nice name - other people think they are nice too.

The problem you have is agreeing - you need a name that you both like. I guess you could go with Isla Lucy or Matilda Evie / they both “go” quite well.

How about Isabelle - Issy for short. Sort of a cross between Isla and Lucy….

LaylaLjungberg · 30/06/2023 16:05

Lucia is lovely. Or Lucie, very underrated

Qbish · 30/06/2023 16:09

Noooo, there are even more Isabellas around than there are Evies or Islas!

This is the problem with first time parents choosing names. They don't realise how many Isla B, Isla F-N and Isla Gs there are in nursery 😆

Lucy is lovely.

NorthWestThree · 30/06/2023 16:09

So many Islas and Evies out there so if popular names are an issue for you (they aren't for everyone!) Then I'd steer clear of those. Matilda had a surge a decade or so ago where I am, so there are lots of 10-15 year olds called Matilda (usually going by Tilly). I'm not a big fan of the name, personally.
Lucy is lovely! I only know one Lucy under 18 (I work with kids so I encounter a lot of names day to day)

Lucy / Lucie is my fave of your list

gettingoldisshit · 30/06/2023 16:10

Lucy or matilda...the other two are so over used at the moment.

rainbowstardrops · 30/06/2023 16:19

I really like Matilda. You could have nn of Milly, Tilly or Tilda.
I've worked with children for over 30 years and have only ever come across one Matilda I think (and she was a gem of a character!!!)

FirstFallopians · 30/06/2023 16:27

I like Matilda best (Queen Matilda, Dahl’s book), then Lucy.

Then a long

long

long

long way down after that, Isla and Evie. They’re so ubiquitous you might as well start calling them Isla M. or Evie S. or whatever straight out of the womb.

PossiblyNotOne · 30/06/2023 16:48

Isla and Evie are sooo overused! She’ll just be Evie P or Isla H. Especially as it always gets paired with Rose/Grace/May.

Not a fan of Matilda, about ten years it was everywhere.

pilates · 30/06/2023 16:49

I like yours not so much his

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/06/2023 16:50

I love Lucy. Sorry about the pun (if your pregnant your probably too young to remember this).

I think Lucy is a beautiful name, it's strong too.

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/06/2023 17:06

Matilda 100%

shoopshoopdedoo · 30/06/2023 21:02

Lucy is my favourite. I really like Evie and Matilda but they are both very popular. I’m not fussed about Isla.
