Nicknames for Evelyn

Hi everyone,

We're deciding on a name for our soon to be born baby girl. Evelyn is a name on our shortlist.
We have 2 boys who both have traditional/ old fashioned names with shortened versions that are more modern so I quite like the fact that Evelyn would fit in with this.

Just wondering if you have or know an Evelyn, what are they known as? Evelyn most of the time? Or do they have a nickname/ shortened version?

Thanks for any help!

I know a couple. One gets Ev (not eve) and the other gets Evie x

Exactly the same for me, one young (Evie) the other old (Ev)

It's not a nickname it's a shortened name. What's this obsession for shortening names nowadays. I gave mine one that couldn't be shortened.

My Evelyn is mostly Evelyn. Sometimes E but only when her sister is feeling lazy. Names don't have to be shortened...

She's also almost 18 so don't think it will be shortened now.

I should probably stay away from the name threads, but here goes…

The Evelyn in my child’s class was always called Evelyn, various pronunciations, never shortened.

It conjures up to me an image of someone living in post-war rationing era, dressed in tweed covered in dog hair in an under-heated country house.

No, I bet at some point her friends may when she gets older though.
I like the name Evelyn more than shortenings/ nicknames to be honest so I'd probably call her Evelyn if we did go with that. I just want to think about all the options which we or other people may end up calling her throughout her life.
When we were picking boy's names I liked Oliver but didn't pick it because I really didn't like the thought of him being called Ollie by anyone even if I didn't call him it myself!

I think people just go with what they like?

If you want to shorten it, shorten it. If you don't don't. Doesn't bother me what other people choose to name their children at all.

Thanks everyone! Very helpful. The more I think about it, the more I just prefer Evelyn to any shortened version but I want to make sure I'm happy with any shortenings that may happen when she's older and has friends and I don't get a day anymore if we were to call her Evelyn.

She's almost 18 so made it through primary and secondary as an Evelyn. I doubt she'll allow it to be shortened now.

God avoid this name. Every other girl is called a variant of it. Its like calling your kid Sarah in the 70s. At one point a third of the girls in dds class were called a variant of Eve - Eve/Evie/Eva. Sooooo boring! Why is it so mentally popular? Its ok but nothing special.

Ee- vie
eh-vie
vee
effy
eve
E
suppose you could also have linn too

SpringSummerDreamer · 28/06/2023 05:43

Have come back to say I knew a Linnie/Linny at school - she used both spellings for variety! Full name was Lindsey, but would work for Evelyn too.
