Edward or Hugo?

Trying to decide between the two! I’m looking for a classic English name that’s easy-ish to spell. (Im currently living outside the UK so popularity is not an issue.) I love the nickname options for Edward, but Hugo feels a bit more special somehow (and I love the meaning of heart and mind). Both have family significance.

Note: I can’t use Hugh or Edmund as they are already in use in the family (mentioning this, because they always get suggested as alternatives!).

Thank you!

Every other child I know is called Hugo

Vexxa · 17/06/2023 05:41

I love both honestly. Tough choice! 😊

I like both, I don’t think you could go wrong.

Hugo

PixiePirate · 17/06/2023 06:45

Hugo, although I do also love Ted as a nickname for Edward. Which goes best with your last name?

I prefer Edward.
Do you like Edwin?

cptartapp · 17/06/2023 06:49

Edward

BCBird · 17/06/2023 06:54

I think if u r posh Hugo is ok but if not I would not give your child thst name, particularly if u ever come to.live jn the UK. I think Edward is ok whatever ur perceived status is. Ed is an ok nick name

JofraArchersFastestBall · 17/06/2023 07:01

Edward

GoodVibesHere · 17/06/2023 07:06

Hugo's awful so it would have to be Edward for me. But there are nicer names.

WeWereInParis · 17/06/2023 07:22

I really like Edward and would have used it if I'd had a boy.
I really dislike Hugo.

Birdiboo · 17/06/2023 08:03

Hugo is hugely popular in the UK right now

Dragonsandcats · 17/06/2023 08:08

I really like both, although probably prefer Edward.

OopsieeDaisy · 17/06/2023 10:53

Definitely prefer Edward, lots of lovely nicknames too

Ophelia55 · 17/06/2023 15:02

I agree about the nickname options for Edward. Although the only baby Hugo I know gets Hugs/Huggy which I think is so sweeet!

Edward. Know a few Hugo’s

shoopshoopdedoo · 18/06/2023 08:12

Love Edward.

I’ve never been keen on Hugo due to the “posh” association, and agree that Edward has fewer preconceptions attached. But also Hugo now seems to be having a moment - I keep meeting baby Hugo’s!

wildfirewonder · 18/06/2023 08:20

Not Hugo.

merderforlife · 18/06/2023 10:16

I LOVE the name Hugo but a close friend has used it so its off our list. Don't like Edward but like Ted/Teddy

Happymummydays · 18/06/2023 18:07

I love Edward, personally don't like Hugo at all

LadyEloise1 · 18/06/2023 18:09

Edward.
I really don't like Hugo.
