Since opinions on Mordecai were a resounding 'no', what are your opinions on Malachi? Would you know how to pronounce it? Do you know any?

I know one. A lovely ten year old. I like it. Much better than Mordecai

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 06/06/2023 10:08

Mal-ak-eye? I like that (if it is correct!)

ThisWormHasTurned · 06/06/2023 10:08

I know a 10 year old with this name. I like it. Bit different but not too “out there”. Pronunciation I’d assume “Mal-a-Kai”..is there another option?

bibbityboppityboo · 06/06/2023 10:08

Sounds lovely! Religious connotations to me, but I don't mind that - it's a really nice name.

CheshireCats · 06/06/2023 10:09

Not my favourite, but ok.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 06/06/2023 10:12

I like it. It's pronounced 'MALLa key.'

junebirthdaygirl · 06/06/2023 10:12

Know a young guy with that name. Love it. Brother to lsaac. I would use it.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 06/06/2023 10:12

Mall to rhyme with shall, that is!

CheshireCats · 06/06/2023 10:13

Mal a kai (like eye)

HoldingTheDoor · 06/06/2023 10:14

It's awful and it reminds me of The Children of The Corn. I still find it a creepy name because of that plus it just has an unpleasant sound imo.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/06/2023 10:17

There's nothing wrong with the name itself, but where I live I have noticed it is very very much a "naughty name". I know Mumsnet don't like to acknowledge that this is a thing, but it is something I would want to know if I were choosing a name.

it has bad associations with me to be honest. It will never be in my top 1,000 boys names!

Radiatorvalves · 06/06/2023 10:22

I like it. I have a colleague (late 20s) called malachi. I’m half Irish but don’t like that many Irish boys names.

wheeltrims · 06/06/2023 10:24

Sorry I just think of Children of the Corn too. Scary

Inadvertentlyspring · 06/06/2023 10:26

Very common Irish name, surely? Lots and lots of St Malachy's churches and schools.

Timeflieswhenyourehavingfun · 06/06/2023 10:28

Malachy is pretty common Irish name, a bit old fashioned like Bernadette. But a nice name all the same. I think Malachi is Hebrew version?

Kez437 · 06/06/2023 10:29

Just my tuppence from an Irish person, Malachy is common here yes (pronounced Mal ack ee) Malachi as the OP is suggesting (pronounced Mal ack ii) is not Irish, or we'll it certainly isn't associated with St Malachy and whilst I know loss of Malachys I know no Malachis

LesLavandes · 06/06/2023 10:30

Agree with Kez

Inadvertentlyspring · 06/06/2023 10:33

Yes it looks like Malachi is the Jewish version. I like it OP but then I do like unusual but old names so don't go by me!

SweetAndSourChick3n · 06/06/2023 10:34

Love it!

defi · 06/06/2023 10:35

I love it

Kanaloa · 06/06/2023 10:37

It’s a nice and useable name. I think it’s much more wearable than Mordecai.

LaDamaDeElche · 06/06/2023 10:38

Me too!

CurlewKate · 06/06/2023 10:40

I wouldn't. It's shooting up the popularity ranks- there were 3 the year before last and 4 last year....

crossstitchingnana · 06/06/2023 10:41

I love this name and chose it for a boy baby but I had girls. We pronounce it Mal a key.
