I think of Paschal Sheehy the news guy.

DontTouchMyMug · 27/05/2023 07:24

I really like it. DH wouldn't agree to it I like it.

Smartiepants79 · 27/05/2023 07:27

It’s a Disney sidekick to whole generation.
It’s ok but I wouldn’t use it unless I was French.

😂
Not the French name.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/05/2023 07:52

I’d class it with Cornelius, Ignatius, Noel and Florence (pronounced ‘Flurrence’ and an old man’s name in these parts).

Yes!

Interestingly I still know quite a number of Ignatius's - all called Iggy. Don't even really think of it!!

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 27/05/2023 07:53

I think I’m missing something, what’s wrong with it? 😄 I know a teen female Pascale but that’s my only reference. Also really like Cal for short!

EarringsandLipstick · 27/05/2023 07:55

Pascal / Pascale in France is different to Paschal in Ireland! @MyFaceIsAnAONB

It just has 'old man' connotations here.

I always quite like Iggy, and I know a very cool 20something Cornelius (admittedly known as Con.)

Hedjwitch · 27/05/2023 07:58

French Pascals sometimes end up with the nn Palou, which I like.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/05/2023 08:06

There is one in my extended family and it doesn’t seem to have caused him any problems.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/05/2023 08:15

@EmptyBedBlues

We've a few 'Connie's' in our family too. It's a long-standing family name linked to the part of Cork that side of the family are from.

Yes! Flurrie with his flat cap, lovely man.

Although Noel is more modern imo.

Connies in my mind are always walking up a boreen with a stick out of the hedge, wearing manky milking overalls and wellies with a rip in the calf…

EarringsandLipstick · 27/05/2023 12:14

Haha @EmptyBedBlues several of the Connie's in my family were exactly this.

The younger crew, not so much!

Hail the old-style Connies!

It’s one the many French names that doesn’t work in English

Hang on - you’re saying you know men called Florence?!

CurlewKate · 27/05/2023 14:17

Yes you are mad. Unless you are quite old fashioned and French.

CurlewKate · 27/05/2023 14:18

It's also, I think, only known among older Catholic men in Ireland.

Love me the Italian Pasquale pronounced Pas Qwa LL

Really, you can say it any way you like, but in Italy they'd pronounce the 'e' at the end.

My first thought as well. I'd almost expect the child to have a Cork accent.
Definitely not the worst name OP and better than having the same name as 5 other children in the class. Someone upthread mentioned Noel. That was actually on my list if DD was a DS as she was due at Christmas but I do personally like old fashioned solid names . I also know a young Ger which is unusual these days and I must say I do like it.

Hang on - you’re saying you know men called Florence?!

It’s traditionally a man’s name round here. Pronounced ‘Flurrence’, and usually abbreviated to Flor (pronounced ‘Flur’) or Florrie (‘Flurrie’.) Not so common these days, and I doubt there are many under the age of 60 — though I do work with a male Florence in his 40s. Traditional name for McCarthy men.

If you’ve read or seen the 1980s TV adaptation of Somerville and Ross’s The Irish RM, based on novels written around the turn of the 20thc, there’s a character called Flurry Knox.
