Really liking the name Pascal. Is that mental hormones?
I grew up in Ireland and I'm sure I heard it somewhere maybe..
is it a nice name or am I mad to even consider?
*it's a boys name

Are you remembering a Paschal candle?

Papernotplastic · 26/05/2023 20:38

It’s a French name.

BotterMon · 26/05/2023 20:39

French and yes it's a boy's name. I like it.

BotterMon · 26/05/2023 20:40

Should add I like it in French. With an English accent it sounds pretty awful.

PickledScrump · 26/05/2023 20:40

I just think of the chameleon from tangled 😂

Or a girl would be Pascale if you are following French naming strictly.

I say them the same in my French accent and my English one.

FirstFallopians · 26/05/2023 20:42

Like Pascal O’Donoghue, that politician with the rather unusual voice?

Or the chameleon from Tangled?

Either way, it’s a negative from me.

Pedro is inexplicably much better?

Mamette · 26/05/2023 20:44

I think it’s usually Paschal in Ireland- like Paschal O’Donoghue as pp mentioned.

Middle aged man name round here tbh. I don’t know of any younger ones.

CountessBathorysBeautySecrets · 26/05/2023 20:44

I was going to say it's a common enough name among 50-something Irish men. Country men, not Dubs. Emphasis on the first syllable as opposed to the French pronunciation. I can't say I love it, it's a bit soft for me.

SomersetBrie · 26/05/2023 20:45

Also grew up in Ireland and knew of a few Pascals. Said "Paskel" rather than with a long cal. Bit of an old man name to me, like Peadar.

Gpnever · 26/05/2023 20:46

I love it.

it was on my list of names too

My thoughts exactly.

There’s a H in the Irish version though.

it’s one of those Latin-y priest-y type names, like Aloysius.

ourflagmeansdeath · 26/05/2023 20:55

Makes me think of Pedro lol. Not my personal taste but it isn't the worst name.

Paschal, Pascal, etc - relating to Easter or Passover.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/05/2023 20:59

No OP, no

It's a name for very definite age range, and hard to not associate it with Paschal O'Donoghue.

Step away from the pregnancy hormones!

But might not 'cool in 2023' names look naff in 2033 or 2043? And vice versa for 'naff in 2023' names? Why are people so judgy about names?

EarringsandLipstick · 26/05/2023 21:24

@CharlottenBurger

I'm being a bit lighthearted. All my 3 DC have Irish names, 2 are not particularly common names but I love them.

Paschal has never been a popular name in Ireland. I just can't imagine a little boy called it - but OP should if she likes it. As a PP said, it's along the same lines as Aloysius or Jeremiah. (Tho both could be shortened & I've know lots of versions of both names used in Cork especially).

But the OP asked about the French name Pascal which is still fairly current, and Pascale is a pretty girl's name, I feel.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/05/2023 21:40

But the OP asked about the French name Pascal

She's Irish. She means Paschal which has the aforementioned connotations.

MrsEmmaKnightley · 26/05/2023 21:59

It could be a sibling name for Ada

SkaneTos · 26/05/2023 22:24

Pascal is a great name! I have relatives with a young son named Pascal, they are German.

KateMularkey · 26/05/2023 22:29

I knew a female Spanish Pascale and a male American Pasquale. Both pronounced the same as Pascal. I quite like it but do think you need to be dark haired and eyed with an olive or dark skin tone to carry it off. Cannot imagine a fair skinned blonde or red head Pascal, unsure why.

I’d class it with Cornelius, Ignatius, Noel and Florence (pronounced ‘Flurrence’ and an old man’s name in these parts).
