Name dilemma-Derry girls

Namingnumber2 · 21/05/2023 22:03

I have a 6.5 Yr old called Erin, who I named before the TV show derry girls came out.
I am now 25 weeks pregnant and had my heart set on the name Orla as I like short names that are easy for children to spell at school. And I think Erin and Orla go well together.
But since watching Derry girls this is 2 main characters, and now I worry it will look silly having 2 girls from the same show. Like naming your kids Monica and Rachel 😅

I wanted Quinn as a middle name for Erin back in 2017, thank God my partner didn't like it as she would of been Erin Quinn which is the main characters full name 😅

Would you Use Orla this time round or do I need to find a new name?

Yes use it. Most people wouldn't even know about Derry girls and if they do they wouldnt care

LutherRalph1 · 21/05/2023 22:04

I've watched the series twice and really enjoyed and wouldn't have made the connection!

PickledScrump · 21/05/2023 22:05

It’s fine. I don’t actually know anyone that watches it. I’ve watched a few episodes but wouldn’t make the connection

dwightschrutebeets · 21/05/2023 22:05

I think it's absolutely fine. They're lovely names together. Derry girls will never be as big as friends it's fine.. would have maybe been too much with the quinn though 🤣

goldenlocks · 21/05/2023 22:05

I think it's fine.

Dartmoorcheffy · 21/05/2023 22:06

Use it, I doubt anyone other than a massive fan would make the connection anyway.

Londonlady1423 · 21/05/2023 22:06

I would say you have nothing to worry about, Derry girls is no where near at the same level as Friends or other well known shows. Having seen the show I would not have noticed until you pointed it out. Any Irish show you'll probably have one of those names if not both mentioned at some point.

Bobbyelvis4ever · 21/05/2023 22:07

They're both lovely names, and I think I would use them. I LOVED Derry Girls. But I don't think it's so well known that everyone would recognise those as being the characters, and assume you've somehow connected them to it,

That said, I get the dilemma. We knocked a name out of the running for son no. 2, as we'd have had 2 of the characters from twilight.

AssertiveGertrude · 21/05/2023 22:07

No one would make the link at all

both lovely names

Namingnumber2 · 21/05/2023 22:08

We watched the whole of the American office when I was pregnant with Erin, think her name came from there with out thinking 😅 so your username made me smile!

Thank you all!
I had my heart set on it but I was really starting to doubt it and thought it might sound weird but knowing those who have watched the show too didnt even make the connection makes me feel heaps better!

And I can stop trolling through names lists trying to find one I remotely like as much.

You could spell it Orlaith just to change it a bit. Two lovely names.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 21/05/2023 22:34

I'm a huge Derry Girls fan, so I'd smile if I heard of two girls with those names 😊 Orla was my favourite!

Gooseysgirl · 21/05/2023 22:36

I'm a massive fan of the show but I doubt I'd have made the connection 😆

ididntknowthat11 · 21/05/2023 22:37

I've also seen it and wouldn't have made the connection

Wolfiefan · 21/05/2023 22:39

Love the show but wouldn’t make the connection. Lovely names.

toothbrusher · 21/05/2023 22:45

Derry Girls is nowhere near as famous as Friends, go for it! As long as you call your third child James or Gerry 😂

sunsetoranges · 21/05/2023 22:46

Gorgeous names together so definitely use!

I've never watched it either.

Timeforchangeithink · 21/05/2023 22:47

I've watched DG numerous times and wouldn't have clicked it was the names from it.

Weirdly I was talking to a woman during the week who mentioned her girls were called Erin and Orla. I didn't make a connection at all with Derry Girls even though I love the series. So I say go for it!

DrHousecuredme · 21/05/2023 22:54

Yes use it. Not many people will make a Derry girls connection and those who do will smile about it for a moment then move on. It's really not worth living your life by what people might think.

PakdHend · 21/05/2023 22:55

I do know Erin and Orla siblings and when watching the show I did comment to dh that it’s the same names as our friends dd's, but that was it. Never thought of it again. I really don’t think it’s a big deal at all. As others have said, Derry Girls won’t be as big as Friends, so I really don’t think it’s an issue.

Ah love this! Someone else has it and doesn't worry about it 🙂

I was really starting to doubt it and was trying to find a new name but everyones replies have assured me it's fine, thank you all 🙂

I have never posted before but glad I did!

I love Derry girls and it wouldn't have occurred to me. Both lovely names, do it.
