Name dilemma-Derry girls

I have a 6.5 Yr old called Erin, who I named before the TV show derry girls came out.
I am now 25 weeks pregnant and had my heart set on the name Orla as I like short names that are easy for children to spell at school. And I think Erin and Orla go well together.
But since watching Derry girls this is 2 main characters, and now I worry it will look silly having 2 girls from the same show. Like naming your kids Monica and Rachel 😅

I wanted Quinn as a middle name for Erin back in 2017, thank God my partner didn't like it as she would of been Erin Quinn which is the main characters full name 😅

Would you Use Orla this time round or do I need to find a new name?

I’m a big fan of the show but wouldn’t think anything of meeting an Erin and Orla. Love both names, Orla was at the top of my next girls names, I also love Oona.

I would use it. Can't see a problem.

I have one of those names and my daughter has the other. No one has mentioned Derry Girls to me -l am a fan but it’s just a coincidence

I wouldn't connect them to the show - they're very popular names in the Irish community.

RoamingToaster · 22/05/2023 10:57

Go for it! The show will likely end by the time your younger child is in school and the connection will be even more removed. The names don't stand out as unique so unlikely people will make the connection.

SaladRooney · 22/05/2023 11:03

But they're both deeply ordinary (though nice) names -- I'm assuming you're not Irish yourself, or you'd recognise that there's no issue, both names are so often used. If you had used Erin Quinn, that would still not have been an issue. Quinn is one of the most common Irish surnames. I mean, I imagine Lisa Magee named her characters these names simply because they are so representative.

Thanks all for the reassurance, I was probably over thinking it! But feel alot better that everyone agrees it's fine 🙂
Orla it is!

I've got an Erin and an Orla. I've never personally seen Derry Girls so didn't realise they are the main characters and nobody has ever made that reference to me. I really wouldn't worry about it!

Ah that's good to hear!
Lovely you have an Erin and an Orla too, I do think the 2 names sound lovely together ❤️

It already finished. I don't think many people will make the connection. Plus, they were two beautiful authentic loyal characters who loved each other like sisters. If anyone makes the connection, it's a really good one. Do it!

And sending strength on the vomiting - had two pregnancies like that, it's grim. Hope it ease
