Please no chav.

No Blaze,Courtney-May, Minky-Rae etc.

My daughter already does not suit her name it is far to gentle for her even dh agrees (I am amazed by this) but I am flummoxed as to what we could call her instead as we had Nell, Annie, Constance and Dolly on our lists and neither of them fit either.

Any suggestions would be very welcomed, I really want to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later I think we have 5 weeks before we can't change it officially.

Ursula, means 'little bear'

Fillyjonk · 20/02/2008 07:58

ah well

both my first and middle name

and both my daughters names

are on this thread, several times

so that is good

Even if I have lost on Lilith

broguemum · 20/02/2008 08:44

Lots of lovely names on here but here's my view FWIW.

If you want a strong name why not go for Matilda which means mighty battle maid / mighty in battle? You can shorten it to Tilly, Tilda, Maud, Maudie or Mat etc etc.

The reason I love it is that it's the name we chose for our little girl when she was rushed off to IC the hour after she was born. She was going to be Constance but we felt the need to give her a fighter's name 'cos she had a fight on her hands the first few days of her life and she WON! The name suits her down to the ground although she probably won't want to live in Australia (waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda. Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me? etc etc fade out......)

Cod

justnotsure · 20/02/2008 09:43

Thank you all.

Short list looks like

George/ie
Tiger (lily) Brilliant I cannot believe we didn't think of that (ds loves it)
Constance (dh hates but shortened to Nancy (dh's fave) Don't like Connie though myself.
Iris- though not everyone's favourite nobody seems to dislike it.

Henrietta (Etta/ Ettie)I can'r get it out of my mind and I don't mind shouting it out. Tiger I am not so confident with.

Perhaps I should post a photo of her so you can see what she looks like

Oh yes, a photo would be fab! And Tiger is great!!
I wanted to call DS that!!

berolina · 20/02/2008 10:00

I love this thread. Emmeline has gone on our 'hypothetical dd' list now (which several of the other names mentioned are already on).

Sylvia, diminutive Lily (yes, not very etymological, but I think it works), would work well?

justnotsure · 20/02/2008 10:00

Ok. Hope this works. Will post it for a little bit.

Sylvie. Now that is good. I read it earlier on and it stuck in my mind.

This is hard, why couldn't you have just all said Minky-May.

aww so cute...she looks like a tiger lily

Greensleeves · 20/02/2008 10:04

She looks like a Tigerlily

RomySchneider · 20/02/2008 10:06

Our daughter is called Cosima but we call her Coco, she's a strong little caracter

justnotsure · 20/02/2008 10:08

Yes? Hmmm.

Dh is going to kill me all these choices. Sylvi shortened to Lily could well work and is not too radically different.
That pic captures her perfectly BTW.

justnotsure · 20/02/2008 10:09

Sorry Romy I didn't see your post Cosima is a beautiful name Coco too.

With those eyes you should be calling her Bambi!!! Gorge. You know I think Lily suits her. . . There are loads of feisty Lilys - Lily Allen, Lily Savage Lilith from Frasier/Cheers . . .
If you have to change it though I think George would suit. Funnily enough my two girls have their names the wrong way round DD1 is Georgia(George) and she is just a typical pink princess DD2 is Grace and she's not at all graceful, she's like a rugby player stuck in a diminutive little frame!!! I'll never change them 'cus it gives me perverse pleasure to think how different they are to their names!!!

Zelda

Was going to suggest Isabel, because I have a very fiery Isabel, but seeing her pic (she's so sweet btw!) I think Zelda

largeginandtonic · 20/02/2008 10:37

Dulcie or Violet

Gorgeous little girl

Are you definitely sure you don't want to choose an "un-loaded" (ie versatile) name like Elizabeth? I think the child in your pic could be an Elizabeth - and then all her existing "Lily"-based nicknames (other than Pobs or whatever you said you use) can still fit - because of Lilibet, etc., as someone else said. Think of Elizabeth Bennet!!

PS my very live-wire dd (who absolutely could be a Thalia if I were that-sort-of-name inclined) has an un-loaded name - she's Laura - and it means she has made the name very emphatically her own.
