This is our list. We've worked on it quite a bit over the past couple of days and we'd like to know what you think.

Ava
Susan
May
Luanna
Beverly
Jane
Shirley
June
Chloe
Luana
Mary
Hope

We like retro-names, but you can be honest if you think they are not ready for a comeback. To us they already sound nice again.

Comment on all names are appreciated, but if you don't have much time just let us know your favourite and least favourite and tell us a bit about why you dislike or like the names.

My favourite is Hope, I think its really classy and cute for a child bit not embarrassing for an adult.

Sorry, but Luanna makes me think of Millhouse's mum on the Simpsons

mouse26 · 15/05/2023 14:27

But not embarrassing*

Theoldwoman · 15/05/2023 14:28

I actually don’t like any, sorry. Just not my taste.

Names I like are

Alice
Melanie
Olive
Genevieve
Juliet
Lucille
Ella
Kate
Charlotte
Zara
Laura
Frances
Naomi

Raggeo · 15/05/2023 14:28

I like May, June and Hope. The others aren't to my taste.

Biscuitea · 15/05/2023 14:29

Fave - June (or Mary)
Least fave - Luanna/Luana (or Beverley)

Treasureboxkey · 15/05/2023 14:29

Ava- nice but popular which would put me off but may not bother you.
Susan- don't like the nickname Sue which feels inevitable.
May- pretty but forgettable and now common as a middle name.
Luanna- don't like, feels cheep.
Beverly- don't like
Jane- dull
Shirley- don't like.
June- really pretty.

Chloe- a bit 90s, not old enough to be cool but pretty enough.
Luana- as above
Mary- cute
Hope- really pretty. I know a gorgeous 3 year old hope and a 90 year old one so it feels timeless to me.

DandelionPockets · 15/05/2023 14:30

Fave - Chloe or Susan (love Suzie as a nn)
Least - Beverly or Shirley

FortofPud · 15/05/2023 14:30

I rather like Susan actually, Susie for short.

Least fav is Shirley as it makes me think of Shirl from Eastenders.

Spidey66 · 15/05/2023 14:30

Favourite is Chloe
Least favourites are Susan and Shirley

Lovemebetter · 15/05/2023 14:31

I like Hope and Jane is due a comeback. Shirley and Beverley are awful sorry.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 15/05/2023 14:31

Ava isn't retro. Lots of those about so depends how you feel about your daughter potentially being one of many Ava's of the same age.

I like May - biased as it was my Nan's name but would probably use it as a middle name

Out of your list I'd go with Hope. None of the others really jump at me

Sœtr · 15/05/2023 14:31

I like May, June, Hope and Beverly reminds me of old movies:)
Good luck! X

DucksNewburyport · 15/05/2023 14:32

Favourite - Chloe
Least favourite - Luana/Luanna

Bathroomlove · 15/05/2023 14:33

Best: Chloe
Worst: Luanda/Luanna

though I'd NEVER use Susan, but that's for personal reasons.

I don't think the world is ready for a revival of Beverley or Shirley either though.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 15/05/2023 14:33

Favourite - Jane or Hope, followed by Ava. Jane is lovely and definitely due a revival.

Least favourite - Luanna and Luana. Not names I’m familiar with and I’m just not keen on the sound.

Lovemebetter · 15/05/2023 14:37

I think it’s time for plain one syllable names like Jane to replace the sweet cutesie names which have been popular for girls for a long time.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 15/05/2023 14:37

wow that’s quite a list. Lots of different styles of names going on there

my fave is June or Mary
the worst is Shirley or May

how do you feel about Jean or Barbara?

Marsyas · 15/05/2023 14:38

Favourites are Hope and Susan, least favourite is Mary. We don't have very similar taste I think, so take my comments with a pinch of salt.

Ava - Ava, Ada, Ida, Eva, all merge together for me
Susan - Classic, retro, I find it quite sweet. Like Little Friend Susan from Milly Molly Mandy.
May -Just find it a bit boring, it's used as a middle name so often
Luanna - Sounds like an American country and western singer
Beverly - Just not for me, I don't know why. I like the sound of Everly but adding the B for some reason makes me not like it. Maybe I think of beverages.
Jane -Honestly the most boring name in the entire world
Shirley - I quite like this actually
June - See Jane
Chloe - It was so popular 15 years ago, I can't shake that
Luana - see Luanna
Mary - For some reason I have just never liked this name, I find it drippy
Hope - pretty and strong

Maybe Robin? Joy? Stella?

jammydodgie · 15/05/2023 14:39

Hope and Mary are nice!

HowBeOn · 15/05/2023 14:39

Faves: Chloe and Hope
Least Fave: Beverley and Shirley, they are 60 year olds to me!

I know a June short for Juniper which I actually do quite like though.

GeraltsBathtub · 15/05/2023 14:40

Favourites - Mary, Jane and Ava
Mid-tier - May, Chloe, Hope
Not ready for a comeback - Susan,
Luanna, Beverly, Shirley, June, Luana
Worst is probably Shirley or Luana/Luanna. The latter would be annoying due to autocorrect to Luanda (capital of Angola).

SourDoughToast · 15/05/2023 14:42

Favourites- Chloe and Hope
Least favourite- Shirley and Beverley. Also don't like Luana as it sounds made up.

elliesmummy19 · 15/05/2023 14:43

I do really like the old kind of names so like your list. Favourite- Susan, least favourite- Beverly, Luana closely behind

Ava- it’s a bit meh. Too popular at the moment and I think it’s a bit boring. Nothing wrong with the name, it’s nice enough just not my favourite.
Susan- definitely think Susan is due a comeback! Not a fan of Sue though so probably wouldn’t use it myself for that reason. I feel like Sue isn’t due a comeback. Also quite like Suzanne. Susan shorted to Suzie is 👍
May- I like it
Luanna- not a fan at all, sorry! Can’t quite put my finger on why but it just isn’t my cup of tea
Beverly- no! Not ready for a come back. Don’t like. Reminds me too much of the 80s. Hate Bev (sorry!!)
Jane- I love Jane! Again, ready for a comeback I feel!
Shirley- meh, it’s not as far down my list as Beverly but I’m not a fan
June- similar to my feelings about Jane- I like it!
Chloe- I don’t have any problems with the name Chloe. Bit boring maybe but perfectly fine
Luana- see Luanna (although I do prefer this spelling if I had to chose one)
Mary- I like it!
Hope- Also like it

RandyMiceDavies · 15/05/2023 14:45

I love Mary. Not keen on Luanna. Beverley and Shirley feel old-fashioned to me, not in a good way, but I'm sure they will seem different to your daughter's generation.

FayCarew · 15/05/2023 14:48

Ava
Susan
May
Luanna
Beverly
Jane
Shirley
June
Chloe
Luana
Mary
Hope

Favourite: Jane, Mary, Susan in that order

Don't like the others. Ava and Chloe overused. May and June too seasonal. Hope too similar to Hopeless, Shirley very dated

Least favourite: Beverley, Luanna, Luana.
