Rory for a girl

So what are peoples opinions on Rory for a girl? I really like it. We are struggling to agree on a girls name. My husband likes Ivy, Daisy, Lily and fern but think they are too cutesy and I want a strong but pretty name

Yes, both the mother and the daughter in "Gilmore Girls" have the name Lorelai, and the daughter is nicknamed Rory.

I think the name Rory is really cute, by the way, and I only know it as a girl name, since I learned about the name from "Gilmore Girls". I had never heard it as a boy name (I am not from UK/USA).

Not really the point of the thread, but why did Lorelai Gilmour name her daughter after herself? Never felt like a very Lorelai thing to do.

I can't exactly remember but it was something along the lines of she was high on gas and air at the time.

She said she thought it was sexist for men to name sons after themselves and whilst high on gas and air decided to do the same.

How do you get from Lorelai to Rory?

Hate it for a boy, such an ugly name. So even worse for a girl.

Wow strong feelings on this one! I have a boy rory - also a GG fan - but would also have considered it had my first been a girl. It's kind of what put it on my list, and then dh also had it on his list (for a boy though). To me it's gender neutral, i guess because of GG. I've never met any girl rory's in real life, only boys.

So boys’ names are ‘strong’ are they? Your DD will have more to worry about than her name if that’s your attitude. Also on what planet is Ivy cutesy? That stuff climbs vertical walls!

Rory Gilmore would have to be one of the most pathetic characters on tv so I would never name a daughter after her. She is the perfect example of someone raised to think they were special and as a result failed to develop any redeeming character traits whatsoever.

I'll bet the comments would be completely different if Rory was suggested for a boy.

I doubt anyone would be declaring they "love it!"

I have to disagree with PPs but that's because I have a DD with a boys name. We used it as her middle name so there is no confusion on forms etc and there are no issues.

For example Caroline James Surname and call her James. (I've changed her actual names).

We have two other DC that go by shortened versions of their first names too, They all like all their names and have choices (I hated my name growing up).

We love it. She loves it. There is no issue regards gender identity or anyone believing we wanted a boy (what a lot of absolute nonsense ffs). Most forms have spaces for name and 'known as'.

Some of the issues raised here are valid regards it's meaning / more commonly used for boys etc. But they're only issues if you care. I like the meaning of all my kids names so I'm happy with them.

But then there are people on here who will argue someone 'stole' THEIR baby name and fall out with people who use similar names on their pets.

You will just never please all of the people all of the time.

@ChocoChocoLatte middle names can often be surnames, so hearing a name like James as a middle name I'd assume it was a family name - your maiden name or one of the Grannies maiden names.

But I wouldn't give a girl James as a first name.

James is one of many mens names that can be a first or second name, so I'd assume any girl with a manish middle James, Peter, Martin, John / Johnson Gregor / MacGregor that it was a family surname rather than their parents choose a man's name from nowhere.

It's the name of one of my favorite characters, I actually didn't consider it for my son because I thought people would assume we were Welsh but that doesn't seem to be an issue these days.

I always thought it was a Scottish rather than Welsh name.

I do like it for a boy but I think with our surname it sounds like a cartoon character

Name your child whatever you like, if you like the name Rory for a girl then go for it. Names like that are becoming more common for girls plus names like Charlie, Frankie and even Jamie have been used for girls for ages

It could be! The book I like it from uses lots of 'Y' and 'dd' in the names and places so I assumed a loose basis on welsh mythology but I think the Gaelic language has some similarities?

There are similarities between Welsh and Gaelic, but the languages are cousins not sisters.
Rory is the anglicised form of Ruairí/Ruaidhrí and Ruairidh
The Welsh name Rhodri also means king
