Rory for a girl

So what are peoples opinions on Rory for a girl? I really like it. We are struggling to agree on a girls name. My husband likes Ivy, Daisy, Lily and fern but think they are too cutesy and I want a strong but pretty name

OP posts:

I like it!

SheilaFentiman · 07/05/2023 23:41

It’s a boy’s name.

Rowan?
Harriet nn Harri?
I think names like Anne and Claire are strong.

Reugny · 07/05/2023 23:43

OP have you checked the meaning of the name?

You are aware that lots of people do business and communicate with people worldwide so people from other cultures will be interested in why her parents gave a girl a name that means "red king". Many will think it is because you didn't want a girl.

pinkdelight · 07/05/2023 23:47

Nope. Why not go the whole hog and call her Roy? Only one letter difference and you wouldn't dream of it would you? Because it's a bloke's name. Like Rory. There are plenty of unusual names that work for both sexes without having to always make things harder for the kid.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 08/05/2023 00:51

No its terrible. Pregnancy hormones?

Oubliette86 · 08/05/2023 01:03

Rory’s full name in the Gilmore Girls is Lorelai, not Aurora.

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2023 01:14

It's fabulous on a boy - the phonetic translation from the Irish language is rua rí meaning 'red king'. It's a strong, masculine name.

It's absolutely bloody awful on a girl.

Beeswood · 08/05/2023 01:18

No. Definitely a boy's name.

I like the names your DH has chosen.

LadyJ2023 · 08/05/2023 01:31

Rory for a girl huh 🤪

Startwithamimosa · 08/05/2023 02:42

I like it. If boys can be Stacey, Ashley, Lee, Shannon, Kim ... why can't a girl be Rory. As long as you're OK with people assuming she's going to be a boy, then go for it

Elieza · 08/05/2023 02:47

Boys name. Sorry op.

SargentSagittarius · 08/05/2023 02:53

I wouldn’t want to be called Rory.

Mainly because it would be beyond tedious to have to continually explain why my parents are such dunderheads that yes, they gave me a name meaning King.

embolass · 08/05/2023 03:13

Eh no, it’s a boys name
Call her Strong instead 😁

echt · 08/05/2023 03:19

Robert and Ethel Kennedy's posthumous child was a girl and is called Rory. 1968.

Not quite what was asked but I’ve not heard “dunderheeds” for years

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 08/05/2023 03:25

No, it's awful. Dislike the roar sound in it. Aurora is awful too. Wor wor wor said by some.

Oblomov23 · 08/05/2023 05:00

Please don't. It's a boys name. Don't do that to her.

gerispringer · 08/05/2023 05:09

It’s a no from me - a nice name for a boy but will she grow up gender confused with everyone thinking she’s a boy/ trans / her parents really wanted a boy so they gave her a boys name.?

user1492757084 · 08/05/2023 06:05

No, your other names are nicer, by far.

Even Lily, which is not on my top fifty names, I prefer to Rory for a girl.

As a nick name for Aurora it is acceptable - giving your daughter options.
Aurora is nice though I prefer Fern, Flora, Ida and Daisy.

Do you like Victoria - Ori; Maurilla or Laura?

UseOfWeapons · 08/05/2023 06:48

No, sorry.

CurlewKate · 08/05/2023 06:50

Only if you'd call a boy Rose.

TrashyPanda · 08/05/2023 06:51

It’s a boys name.

literally and in practice

...those are all originally boy's names co-opted by parents of girls who wanted something 'edgy' 🤷🏻‍♀️

CurlewKate · 08/05/2023 08:34

@Startwithamimosa Those are all originally boys names. Surprisingly 🤔 once people started to use them for girls, they suddenly stopped being popular for boys. Because nobody-and I mean nobody ever thinks "I want my son to have a strong name. I know, I'll call him Daisy."

gettingoldisshit · 08/05/2023 08:35

I think its hideous, however i don't like it for a boy either.
