Our daughter will be Eva Marie.

I was just wondering, if you had to pick a similar sounding name, would you prefer that over Eva Marie or not? Overall I'm happy with our choice, but sometimes I wonder whether Aoibhinn is more interesting or Eve a bit more classic or Ava is prettier.

Similar names we like as well:

  • Ava
  • Eve - growing on us, I found it a bit bland at first
  • Evie - growing on me, too
  • Aoibhinn - ee-ven
  • Aoibheann - ee-ven
  • Aoibhín - ee-veen
  • Ava Marie

Thanks a lot!

I wouldn't have any idea how to pronounce those, I'm sorry.

Personally I like Eve.

Ava is pretty, but very popular where I live.

Onemyownhere · 28/04/2023 09:29

I like Evie/ Ava marie

PeskyRooks · 28/04/2023 09:31

Eva Marie is the best.
Ava Marie is too much like Ave Maria.
Eve and Evie is far too much eeeee!
Aoibhinn and the other similar ones will have to be spelled for people constantly if you are outside of Ireland?

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 28/04/2023 09:34

I've always preferred Eva to Ava so I'd say you've made a good choice.

Pemba · 28/04/2023 09:40

I really like it! Wasn't there a film star, Eva Marie Saint or something? In The Waterfront with Marlon Brando?

Will you be calling her Eva Marie or is Marie just a middle? (glad you've avoided the dreaded hyphen?).

I do like just Eve or Eva but they are too popular nowadays, with Eva Marie you've made it more unusual. Very pretty!

Pemba · 28/04/2023 09:48

For the others I'd say Ava and Eve, too popular, Evie too cutesy and childish for the name down on the birth certificate, the Irish names, I am a bit unfamiliar but unless you are in Ireland you may find other people trip up on the spellings. They sound nice though.

Ava Marie, nah, because of the religious song 'Ave Maria'.

KirstenBlest · 28/04/2023 10:13

Ava - overused and bland
Eve - classic but Evie names are overused
Evie - overused
Aoibhinn - spelling & pronunciation issues, Evie names are overused
Aoibheann - spelling & pronunciation issues, Evie names are overused
Aoibhín - spelling & pronunciation issues, Evie names are overused
Ava Marie - Ave Maria
Eva - overused, prefer Eve

I like Eva Marie best.
or Eve Maria

Mary Ellen
Evangeline
Victorie

PickledScrump · 28/04/2023 11:07

Honestly they are all so overused and dull. Eve is the best. Unless you live in Ireland the Irish spellings just set her up for a life of mid spellings and having to correct people.

personally I think Maria is miles better. Maria Eve if you must have it .

littlemousebigcheese · 28/04/2023 11:10

every other girl round here is called Eva/Ava/Evie so I hear it a lot! It's a bit too popular for my liking but if you love it, Eva is nice but I know one pronounced ever, one pronounced eeva and one who is spelt like Eva but pronounced like Ava so it's tricky!

Sunshinemum12 · 28/04/2023 11:32

Adore Ava (or any of your other beautiful suggestions). Just to say (and I don't want to be negative) but if you live outside our Ireland I would avoid Aoibhín (or any name with Irish spelling) I have an Irish name but never lived in Ireland and it's been a nightmare for me, not a day goes by without me helping someone pronounce it! I'm almost 40 now! As a kid I wished my name was Anna! Good luck xx

ourflagmeansdeath · 28/04/2023 20:31

I've seen so much of your Eva Marie stuff here! 😁It is a lovely name by the way.

Ava - I do like Ava and the pronunciation is more straightforward but Eva is nicer
Eve - Eva is a lot better, she can have Eve as the nickname
Evie - Once again, could very easily be a nickname and Eva is more elegant
Aoibhinn, Aoibheann, Aoibhín - I love Irish names but I feel like these would cause a lot of spelling issues and Eva is nicer anyway
Ava Marie - It's lovely!

But as a whole Eva Marie is the best of the similar sounding names. Stick with it. 😊

SkaneTos · 28/04/2023 22:05

I like the names Eva and Marie together! Very nice.

what happened to the one last vote? One last voting, please :) | Mumsnet

You're quite pedantic and your reply isn't helpful at all. If you can't be kind, maybe just don't comment at all. You're really not helping in making this a nice and welcoming place for expectant parents.

I am also a big fan of Eva and it is a front runner on our list! I think your choice of Eva Marie is beautiful. I like Eve and Ava also, less of a fan of the ones with complicated spellings as I personally would not have known how to pronounce these.
I’d stick with your first choice and wouldn’t let comments on here dissuade you if you love it. There seems to be some very polarised thoughts on the Eve names but imo they are popular for a reason (and in my experience actually not that popular as I don’t know very many!)

lovelylaurie · 28/04/2023 22:33

I like all of them. My favourite is Ava. DH is Irish, but I find Aoibheann a bit too complicated if you are not in Ireland. It is pretty, though! But I would do Aoibhinn because it feels a bit less complicated or maybe Aoibhe?

I love Irish names but Aoibhinn, Aoibheann, Aoibhín seem like you would have to do lots of explaining (both spelling and pronunciation) kind of in the same way that you'd have to do this for the Eilis, Éilis, Éilís, Ailish, Eilish etc. group.

I would choose something a bit easier: Aoibh, Aoibhe, Aoife, Maeve or just Ava.

salamithumbs · 29/04/2023 01:19

I think, unless you are in Ireland, people will find Aoibhín/Aoibhinn/Aoibheann difficult to spell and pronounce (and even if you're in Ireland, people never seem to agree on whether it's pronounced like 'even', 'eeveen' or 'ayveen'). So would avoid for that reason!

What about Evanna instead? I'm from Dublin and I knew 3 Evannas growing up but I don't think it's that common a name really, especially not in the UK.

I don't have any strong preference between Eva, Eve, Evie and Ava but I think Eva Marie is better than Ava Marie as it's too similar to Ave Maria, just sounds like a prayer imo.

emmathedilemma · 29/04/2023 06:27

But you’ve asked the same question so many times!!

Missmiller · 29/04/2023 06:51

I love Eva Marie, it’s lovely.

Eve is pretty but may get annoying on Xmas eve !!

I also love Ava.

katemulberrybush · 29/04/2023 10:44

It's too close to Ave Maria

katemulberrybush · 29/04/2023 10:47

I cant unhear pavarotti singing her name

Onemyownhere · 29/04/2023 14:20

All the poster has asked is from the names and spelling she has listed which ones do u prefer, she never asked anyone for a different spelling or a long story about why u hate the names.
