How is Aoibhinn pronounced correctly?

I think it looks very pretty.

We are not considering it as DD will be Eva Marie, just curious.

Eve-inn

StopStartStop · 26/04/2023 14:07

Is that the same name as my great-great-great grandma Abhine? A as in cat, then 'veen' rhymes with queen. Not offended if I'm wrong.

StopStartStop · 26/04/2023 14:07

Aha, an 'Ee' sound. Thanks!

WinterofOurDiscountTentz · 26/04/2023 14:08

Ee-veen.

There are slight differences though depending on region/dialect.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 26/04/2023 14:09

I'd pronounce it as Even

Sockmate123 · 26/04/2023 14:16

It's pronounced 'ay-veen' 😊

limitedintel · 26/04/2023 14:18

The one I know is Ay-Veen. Lovely name!

WinterofOurDiscountTentz · 26/04/2023 14:19

Sockmate123 · 26/04/2023 14:16

It's pronounced 'ay-veen' 😊

Nah. Aoi is always an EE sound

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 26/04/2023 14:19

Sockmate123 · 26/04/2023 14:16

It's pronounced 'ay-veen' 😊

I have no doubt there’s an Aoibhinn out there who pronounces it that way but it's incorrect, even allowing for regional accent variations.

Sockmate123 · 26/04/2023 14:16

It's pronounced 'ay-veen' 😊

It really isn’t.

Aoibh = Eve

mummyoffourminimes · 26/04/2023 14:20

Evinn without the fada.

Eveen with the fada

schnubbins · 26/04/2023 14:25

I know it also as Ay veen .I had one in my class at school in southern Ireland mid 80's.

Poor child was pronouncing her own name wrong then.

It does happen. I know a Saoirse who pronounces her name Sorsha and a colleague knows a “Seeoban” (Siobhan). Doesn’t make them right!

SunnyFog · 26/04/2023 19:48

My cousin is Aveen, rhymes with daydream.

VaddaABeetch · 26/04/2023 19:57

I’ve heard Ciara promounced See are a in the US. It wasn’t Chiara.

belwiz · 26/04/2023 19:58

Aoibhinn is pronounced Ee-veen

Pollywoddles · 26/04/2023 20:05

Ee-veen here too

Gcsunnyside23 · 26/04/2023 20:29

I pronounce it ave-een and most I know pronounce it this way but I've heard others pronounce it eve-een. It depends what area you're from I think, like saoirse and caoimhe are slightly varied depending where you live too

Flyfodder · 26/04/2023 20:32

Aoibhinn should be pronounced "EE - vin"

It's often pronounced AY - veen . Or EE - veen

But it's missing fadas so EE vin it is

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/04/2023 20:36

EEvinn

It’s really widespread, but it’s still
wrong!

How are these other two names pronounced?

Carretera · 26/04/2023 21:30

It's Even

kitsuneghost · 26/04/2023 21:35

Eve-in. Or Bob if you like.

Carretera · 26/04/2023 21:36

Irish ancestors, and to me it is Ev-en.
Wasn't there once a "Craic" section on Mumsnet?
