Mercy?

Honest opinions on the name Mercy for a little girl? It's a family name, but never met the family members so not sure what it's like in reality. The only thing that puts me off is may be strange visiting France essentially being called thank you?! 😬

It's ok, but will get the odd comment.
Penny and Conn don't really work in France

Not a fan of virtue names in general, but really don't like Mercy. Has negative connotations to me.

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 21/04/2023 18:44

Sorry I don’t like it at all.

Floralnomad · 21/04/2023 18:45

Awful , it’s not even a nice sounding word .

GoodChat · 21/04/2023 18:46

It's a terrible name.

hugefanofcheese · 21/04/2023 18:51

I quite like a virtue name but just don't love the sound of mercy tbh. Is it the sound or meaning you like? Clemency maybe?

shivawn · 21/04/2023 18:52

I always thought it was an African name because the few women I've met named Mercy have been from Nigeria and Ethiopia. A quick Google shows it actually has British origins though.

It's okay but I'm not a big fan sorry.

Saucery · 21/04/2023 18:52

I like it but prefer Clemency.

GoodVibesHere · 21/04/2023 18:58

I really don't like it sorry, why on earth would you call a child mercy.

It makes think 'please have mercy', I mean it would be like being called 'forgive me' or 'don't kill me'.

It doesn't make me think of the French for thank you, as it's pronounced differently - merci doesn't sound the same as mercy.

KittyMcKitty · 21/04/2023 19:01

MN always hates virtue names and there are normally a lot of unpleasant comments !! I think it’s a lovely name and unless you live in France I wouldn’t worry (pronunciation is different anyway).

Yes I would too, but doesn’t that use of British names in Africa date back to the slave trade? (My history is ropey!)

BarelyLiterate · 21/04/2023 19:06

What happens if she grows up to be a nasty, selfish, judgemental person?

DelphiniumsBlueWildRose · 21/04/2023 20:50

I prefer Clémence.
Much more classy.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 21/04/2023 21:14

I really, really love it and the few I've met have always been lovely.

Foundryside · 21/04/2023 21:26

I love it

Yogagrandmum · 21/04/2023 21:30

St Thomas Mores daughter was called Mercy

Stichintime · 21/04/2023 21:31

Please don't. Too many connotations.

Notellinganyone · 21/04/2023 21:33

I like it. There’s a Mercy in Tess of the d’Urbervilles. It’s a good Puritan/Quaker name.

Soproudoflionesses · 21/04/2023 21:35

Don't like it. At all.

Mercy1968 · 21/04/2023 22:51

I m prejudiced I think but I love the name Mercy😀

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 22:57

I know of a child called godswill, mercy is right up there with that name 🙈 poor child.

Snugglemonkey · 21/04/2023 23:02

I hate it. I rarely say that but I really do dislike virtue names and I hate this one particularly. It makes me think of someone totally powerless begging not to be raped or murdered or tortured. Did the family members have another name? A surname that could be a name even?

WaltzingWaters · 21/04/2023 23:05

Sorry, don’t like it at all. Nothing to do with it being odd in France though- it’s pronounced differently anyway.

100% my thoughts.
Reminds me of Catholic guilt.

I did very very briefly consider Mercedes as a name for my DD but shortened to Sadie not Mercy .

DD is hugely relieved I didn't !
