Mercy?

Honest opinions on the name Mercy for a little girl? It's a family name, but never met the family members so not sure what it's like in reality. The only thing that puts me off is may be strange visiting France essentially being called thank you?! 😬

No. Just no.

It makes think 'please have mercy', I mean it would be like being called 'forgive me' or 'don't kill me'.

Likewise.

Mercy is fine.
I prefer the sound of Marcie or Marcy .. nick names for ..
Marcelle
Marceline
Marcia
Or Maisie .. nick name for ..
Mary or May.

Oneglassisnotenough · 22/04/2023 06:42

Nope. No way.

Too many connotations as a pp said and now I’m singing along to Duffy in my head …

Please don’t .

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 22/04/2023 06:49

no, really don’t like it

MooMaa83 · 22/04/2023 06:59

Love it! Mercedes nn Mercy. As pp said French pronounce Merci very differently

ElmTree22 · 22/04/2023 07:52

Can't help but think of that chav on holly oaks when I hear this!
It's a bit of a chavvy name.

Mercy1968 · 22/04/2023 08:33

It's a virtue name, like Grace Prudence Faith Charity etc.
Victorians were big on virtue names.
It's nice.

HuggingtheHRT · 22/04/2023 08:41

I hate pretty much all virtue names, so it's a hard pass from me....

Runnerduck34 · 22/04/2023 09:47

Im not keen if im honest, some virture names are more mainstream such as faith or grace, but mercy isnt one of them and the meaning of the word,ie begging for mercy etc is still what first springs to my mind although I know it a popular name in some cultures.
It does sound nice when said out loud but personally I would use it as a middle name.

SingLikeADuck · 22/04/2023 10:47

It just made me instantly think of this song

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/04/2023 10:49

I don’t like it - it’s very heavy weather for a virtue name, somewhat sexist (can you imagine a boy called Mercy? no, because only women are expected to be endlessly forgiving), and it does make you sound like a fundie Christian. Use it as a middle name.

Contoneaster · 22/04/2023 10:54

It makes me think of the family on Welcome to Plathville who are Christian Fundamentalists with a daughter with that name

Wrongsideofpennines · 22/04/2023 10:56

I'm not keen. It's probably my least favourite virtue name. But I guess it could work as a middle name if you needed to use it.

I also don't think I've met a Mercy who wasn't of a black African background. Which of course you may well be!

notacooldad · 22/04/2023 11:58

I love it.
My son's ex girlfriend is called Mercy. She is in her 20s.
The only other two are both from New Zealand.

Sleepyandconfused · 22/04/2023 11:58

I think it’s gorgeous - gentle sounding and pretty. It also sounds nothing like ‘thank you’ in French, unless you have a very bad accent when speaking French!

ourflagmeansdeath · 22/04/2023 12:28

I know one with a brother Billy. I think the sound of it is nice but the virtue meaning puts me off a lot and it'd get a lot of comments

ThomasinaLivesHere · 22/04/2023 15:32

I think it sounds nice but the meaning would put me off. I think there are other virtue names which have more positive connotations.

emmathedilemma · 21/04/2023 19:03

Yes I would too, but doesn’t that use of British names in Africa date back to the slave trade? (My history is ropey!)

Mostly from missionaries in the 1800s & 1900s saying that you have to have a 'Christian' name and not a 'heathen' name. Sometimes you wouldn't be enrolled for school exams and things like that without an English name to put on the certificate.

emmathedilemma · 22/04/2023 16:43

Ah that makes sense @ThatFraggle !

RobertaTheRotund · 22/04/2023 18:38

Mercy and the French word merci don't sound the same. In French the word mercy in an English accent just sounds like meeeeeh si (which can mean if or sometimes yes) 🤓. It doesn't have a meaning in French, so I would not worry about that

Daisybuttercup12345 · 25/04/2023 23:42

I really wouldn't.
