Pronounced Ca-Tree-nah.

Thoughts?

Expecting DC2. Don't know sex yet but just putting together a long list.

Sibling to Andrew.

lovely

OneForTheRoadThen · 21/04/2023 07:16

I went to school with a girl with this spelling of Catriona. She spent a lot of time correcting people who pronounced it 'cat ree oh na'

husbandcallsmepickle · 21/04/2023 07:17

I would pronounce Catriona as Cat-ree-oh-nah
Catrina would be Cat-ree-nah

Klex · 21/04/2023 07:18

It's a Gaelic name with a Gaelic spelling.

If people can manage Niamh or Siobhan I'm sure they can manage Catriona.

It’s a common name in Scotland, there would be no pronunciation problems. Goes well with Andrew as the patron Saint of Scotland.

I think of it as a bit dated - 60s name.

Exactfare · 21/04/2023 07:19

Lovely name, Catriona is of course the correct spelling

She'll need to correct people but better than using a made up spelling

greenkitten2 · 21/04/2023 07:22

I like it! (I also did read it as cat-ree-oh-nah initially).

massistar · 21/04/2023 07:30

Love Catriona. Scottish so know how to pronounce it. Cat is a very cool nickname too.

RenoDakota · 21/04/2023 07:38

Beautiful name.
I am not Scottish and know how to pronounce it properly.

But I had a friend who called herself cat-ree-oh-nuh (she was Scottish). Not everyone pronounces it like you. Unlike with Niamh etc where there is only one way...

uhtredbebbanburg · 21/04/2023 07:42

I love that spelling. You’ll be fine here in Scotland for pronunciation but might struggle in the rest of the world. I’m American and didn’t know the pronunciation until I moved to Scotland.

I'm probably thick but I wouldn't have known exactly how to say it unless you said. I think it is a nice name though.

I have a name that has two pronunciations. I don't really even notice which people say. I also have to spell it as various spelling options.

Sisisimone · 21/04/2023 07:51

I like it. When you confirmed pronunciation OP I thought what other possible way could there be to pronounce it, then someone came up with cat-ree-oh-nah 😂
I think the amount of times someone pronounced it incorrectly would be very few and far between. I've never heard it pronounced anything other than Ca-Tree-nah.

Runningslow · 21/04/2023 07:54

I don’t think we have any left as the dog kept chewing them

And my garden isn’t full of poo!

slamfightbrightlight · 21/04/2023 08:02

There’s also more than one way to pronounce Niamh 😁 Where I’m from it’s Nee-yuv not Neev.

Catriona is a great name.

Christmascracker0 · 21/04/2023 08:04

I like it 😊 I’m Scottish and would pronounce it Cat-ree-na but my mum pronounces it Cat-ree-uh-na. I think it’s our different accents though.

ditalini · 21/04/2023 08:06

The gaelic pronounciation has 4 syllables but the 3rd is very soft as the emphasis is on the 2nd.

Roughly Ca TREE uh nuh

But most people say Catrina and both are lovely.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 21/04/2023 08:07

I am careful to learn pronunciations but I am embarrassed to admit that I only learnt that this name is pronounced Kat-ree-na very recently, from this board. I grew up with one who pronounced it Kat-ree-oh-na.

Runrowdream · 21/04/2023 08:08

Lovely name - not heard it in 40 years

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/04/2023 08:11

Catriona is cat-tree-oh-na
