Pronounced Ca-Tree-nah.

Thoughts?

Expecting DC2. Don't know sex yet but just putting together a long list.

Sibling to Andrew.

Catriona is cat-tree-oh-na

No it isn't.

VentBox · 21/04/2023 08:24

I had no idea how to say it. There are lots of Corona letters in there so it reminded me of the virus -I am dyslexic.

It is nice, it is not a name I have heard of on a baby before, I know 3 who would all be about 50+ now.

hugefanofcheese · 21/04/2023 08:25

Beautiful name, if people aren't sure at first they'll pick up the pronunciation quickly enough. I don't think it would be a big problem.

The gaelic pronounciation has 4 syllables but the 3rd is very soft as the emphasis is on the 2nd.

Roughly Ca TREE uh nuh

But most people say Catrina and both are lovely.

This is exactly how we say it (though we use a shortened version 99% of the time).

PickledScrump · 21/04/2023 11:18

I would immediately assume it was Cat-tree -oh-na. But there is several Eastern European girls in my daughter’s school with that name pronounced like that.

Toottooot · 21/04/2023 11:20

Any Catriona I know pronounce it Ca tree o na and are fed up correcting those who call them Ca tree na.

I only know the opposite.

Catriona is cat-tree-oh-na

Lovely name. I would pronounce it like this though.

Different strokes for different folks 🤷🏻‍♀️

Beseen22 · 21/04/2023 11:28

Are you in Scotland? The majority here would pronounce it Catreena. I could be wrong but wouldn't be surprised if there was people from the Western Isles who would say it more like Catreeona. I have a Ruaridh and have a friend from Lewis and one from Skye and they say his name as Rooo-ah-ree. I love the way they say his name, it's very sing song. It doesn't in any way annoy me that it's not the way we say it.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 21/04/2023 11:53

It's a lovely name. I think more people these days might know the "proper" pronunciation from the actress Caitriona Balfe, although her spelling is slightly different (Irish v. Scottish spelling, I think?)

midsomermurderess · 21/04/2023 11:59

It’s Scottish I think isn’t it. I like it. Don’t know how much used it is these days.

SOMumm · 21/04/2023 12:07

There was a Catriona ? thread a few years ago, discussing shortenings,Treena, Cat, Cait etc. I think the romantic heroine in ‘Kidnapped’ is when I first heard it, associating it with derring do and Scottish pride. A good complement to Andrew.

If Catriona is what you want, Catriona it is !

MistressIggi · 21/04/2023 12:10

I teach in Scotland and have had quite a few Catrinas - always Cat-reena but that will depend where you are (and parental preference. Nice classic name here

OuchIStubbedMyBigToe · 21/04/2023 07:40

But I had a friend who called herself cat-ree-oh-nuh (she was Scottish). Not everyone pronounces it like you. Unlike with Niamh etc where there is only one way...

I also know a scottish Cat-ree-o-na. Niamh is Nee-uv, but Neev is used a lot.

SuperGinger · 21/04/2023 12:37

Love it

Motherofmonsters · 21/04/2023 12:39

Someone I knew was called Catriona (Cornish) pronounced Cat-ree-oh-na.
She only went by Cat though

Bingo! This is what I was going to try and explain.

CaptainSeven · 21/04/2023 12:52

@SoupDragon it's one possible version for sure. It's the version I know.

Most people say it the lazy way.

Came here to say this, it has four syllables. Might be easier to go with Catrina or Katrina if that is how you would pronounce it, especially if south of the border.

skyfalldown · 21/04/2023 13:44

Scottish and I know some Catrionas who say it as Cat-tree-oh-nah and others who say it as Cat-tree-nah so you'll likely always have some people pronouncing it 'wrong'

ratherbepaddleboarding · 21/04/2023 14:00

I'm not Scottish and know how to pronounce it.

I love it.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/04/2023 14:06

I have a Katrina as we felt it was easier for people to pronounce than Catriona. We like the very Scottish Ca-treeo-na pronunciation but no one would ever know to say it that way.

BridieConvert · 21/04/2023 22:46

Love it. As you can see from this thread though, lots of variations in how people pronounce it!
Not an issue in Scotland but if you are elsewhere may be an issue, depends how much it would bother you. There's also the Katrina spelling - don't like Catrina.

schnubbins · 21/04/2023 22:47

Lovely
