How many Evies do you know?!

So grateful for all the responses on my previous thread.
To further this - and hopefully help to narrow things down further for us - I wanted to ask specifically how any Evies do you know? If you’re happy to share your region (north, south etc) that would be great.

Thank you for your replies. I’m sorry to see some mean spirited responses, particularly since lots of people on this thread have kindly volunteered experiences with their own daughters named Evie/Eve/Evelyn/Eva. Of course, everybody is entitled to their own opinion of the name but that wasn’t directly what this thread was asking and I hope that nobody has been offended by some of the remarks I have read on here.
For what it’s worth, I think they are beautiful names and popular for good reason.

While I don't have one myself, I'm really surprised people say they know lots of Eve's rather than Evie's. Eve has never even made it into the top 50, even when it surged slightly in the late 90's/early 2000's. Otherwise it's generally stayed on a pretty even keel somewhere between 120-200 - it's in that sweet spot of very well known, easy to spell and pronounce but not overused imo. I think there's a reason it often makes "classic" name lists - and I personally know 3 - one in their 70's, one 40's and another in her teens, so I think it suits all ages.

I agree Eva/Efa/Evie/Evelyn does seem a lot more popular with the younger crowd - I'm in North Wales and know at least a couple of each, all under 20 (apart from one Evelyn who'd be over 100 now if she was still with us). However I'm still not sure how some posters are so certain the "Ev" names will date especially badly - how is Eva/Evie/Evelyn any different than Sophie/Sofia/Sophia, Isabel/Isabelle/Isabella, Mia/Maya/Mila, Milly/Tilly/Lilly, Layla/Lila/Lyra, Ellie/Ella/Elsie etc... more than half the girls names in the top 100 blend into one another! There's less obvious standout "surging" popular names like the Tracey's and Karen's of the past imo.

It was MASSIVELY dated when I was given it in the 1970s - a total ‘old lady’ name and not in a good way.

Come the turn of the century, and suddenly everyone started calling their daughters my name (and its many variations).

All the Evie / Sophie / Isabelle / Mia / Molly / Ellie names will date to this era.

By the time out DC have children of their own, they definitely will not be going for these ^^ names.

I have a DD whose birth certificate says Eva but we've only ever called her Evie.

Oh, I agree most of the popular (top 50 ish) names will date to some extent @TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand - the only way to to avoid that with popular names is to choose one that has always been popular (lots more choice for boys, but basically limited to Elizabeth for girls!).

I just can't see why the "Ev" names will date anymore than many of the other girls names in the top 100! With so many being quite similar now, if OP isn't bothered by popularity then I don't see why picking Evie rather than say, Lily or something is any better or worse. We have no idea what could be the Tracey or Karen of the future (ie. unfairly a bit of a negative stereotype now) rather than the Susan or Linda (dated to age but no stereotype on background/behaviour).

I only know one Evie and she’s about 10. We have an Eve in the family. It’s always been one of my favourite names. I much prefer it to Evie and Eva. It’s much less common ( used less). Our family Eve got Evie when she was growing up but gets Eve the vast majority of the time now.

For me it’s the dominance of the ‘ee’ or ‘ay’ + ‘v’ pattern that makes each individual name seem even more ubiquitous and I suspect this is what will ultimately be associated with 2010s and 2020s babies. Ava in particular is absolutely everywhere. The more ubiquitous a name the more likely it will be used to describe an archetype. Something similar happens with boys’ names being described as ‘naughty’: there is no such thing as a ‘naughty name’ but Jack, for example, is sometimes described as such because there are simply so many of them and a few of them are a bit naughty.

Popularity doesn’t matter a jot to many many people but those genuinely unbothered people don’t start threads on MN asking how many Evies everyone knows!

I don’t think anyone has shown you these numbers @pancakesandpepsi ; apologies if so.

You need to consider the combination of Evies and Evelyns to get an accurate picture of the current popularity of Evie only (leaving aside the other Evie-adjacent names).

Evelyn, # 21, 1729 babies in 2021.

1670+1729=3399

Assuming that a significant proportion of the Evelyns will be known as Evie this places Evie at #2 in England and Wales, behind Olivia (#1, 3649) and ahead of Amelia (#2, 3164) and Ava (#4, 2576). This doesn’t account for the 113 Evangelines or 281 Eves who, if added, would take the figure (3793) ahead of Olivia and make Evie the most popular name in the country if they all used the diminutive.

I only mention this because you said that popularity is a consideration and I think it’s helpful to get an accurate picture. Don’t forget that your child is very unlikely to spend their whole life in the region where you currently live.

Not Evie, but Eve. My niece she's 22, I hated the name when she was born but love it now and it suits her. She's stunning, bright, has a lot of fun and enjoys life.

Evie is also #17 in Scotland with 161 born in 2022. Meanwhile Evelyn is #80 with 51.
