Is Neve supposed to be pronounced the same as Niamh, or like the Spanish for snow?

Spanish for snow is nieve (nee eh vay) Neve is the same as Niamh (Neev)

fairycupcakes · 06/04/2023 20:51

Emilia is really pretty but so is Neve but I prefer the Niamh spelling so on that basis Emilia :)

Tellmethespoiler · 06/04/2023 20:53

Emilia.

JenniferBarkley · 06/04/2023 21:02

Emilia because I don't love Neve.

I think it looks like you can't spell Niamh, and if it's actually because you have Spanish heritage I think there would be better names to choose since everyone will see Neve and think Niamh.

WhatFreshHeckle · 06/04/2023 21:03

Emilia

lsanny · 06/04/2023 21:15

How are you pronouncing Neve?

LizzieBet14 · 06/04/2023 21:33

Emilia (wish i'd have chosen it for mine.....)

Lovelyring · 06/04/2023 21:38

Neve because I don't like mealy sounding names.

RobinRobinMouse · 06/04/2023 21:41

Emilia, Neve looks like it's spelled incorrectly to me.

TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand · 06/04/2023 21:43

Niamh isn’t actually pronounced ‘Neve’ though, is it? Isn’t there actually a gentle second syllable?

OP - people will say they prefer Emilia because of the spelling of Neve, and others will say they prefer Neve because Emilia (and its ilk) are ubiquitous and over-used.

Both reasons are negatives.

Emilia is ubiquitous? I don't think I've ever met one, and the only one I can think of is Emilia Fox.

The Niamhs I know (in England) just pronounce it Neev, but I'm not sure of the correct Irish pronunciation.

Anoisagusaris · 06/04/2023 23:33

Wouldn’t Neve be pronounced Nev rather than Neeve/Niamh?

elgreco · 06/04/2023 23:50

Niamey can be pronounced Neeve but I and a lot of other irish people would pronounce it as Nee uv.

elgreco · 06/04/2023 23:51

Niamh

Collisionofus77 · 06/04/2023 23:55

Neve pronounced nev I assume not the same as Niamh

JeanieJo · 06/04/2023 23:55

Neve. Pretty, and I like that spelling.

There’s an ‘and its ilk’ in the brackets there. 😉

TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand · 07/04/2023 02:02

…and as per PP, Niamh in Ireland is pronounced closer to Nee-uv.

Marynotsocontrary · 07/04/2023 02:08

Is Neve supposed to be Neev? Like a pp I would pronounce it Nev like Neve Campbell.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 07/04/2023 11:25

If this spelling then definitely Emilia but I prefer Niamh. I do prefer Amelia to Emilia though.

emmathedilemma · 07/04/2023 13:06

Emilia purely because i prefer Niamh to Neve

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 07/04/2023 13:10

Emilia is ubiquitous? I don't think I've ever met one, and the only one I can think of is Emilia Fox.

But Amelias are everywhere and most people pronounce both names the same way.

LlynTegid · 07/04/2023 16:34

Emilia. Neve will be misspelt or people will be forever asking how it is spelt.

HappyMe6 · 07/04/2023 16:37

Neve is lovely

Junegirl15 · 07/04/2023 17:15

Much prefer Emilia
