Freaking love the name Roux for a baby girl but no one else seems keen - I know it’s my baby, my choice etc but will I regret it?

Wren?

Wha · 04/04/2023 23:04

No. It is a very stupid idea. You might as well call her gravy.

Someone upthread compared this to Steak Diane. But that is a sauce named after a goddess. Very different to naming your child after a sauce.

Stop thinking about what you want (which is clearly to be the mum to a ‘weird name’ child) and start thinking about what is best for your child. If you had been doing that you would never have come up with this idea.

Turnipworkharder · 04/04/2023 23:06

Isn't that the spelling in cookbooks for making a sauce ?

HappyHealthy23 · 04/04/2023 21:49

"Roux" is a red-headed boy/man in French, as well as the sauce thickener.

Was coming on to say it is a masculine word in French. Pop singer La Roux used to annoy me as it should be La Rousse or Le Roux 🤓

RenoDakota · 04/04/2023 23:33

Spelt Rue I think it is beautiful (and don't associate it with the regret meaning). Have loved it since the first Hunger Games.

Spelt Rue I think it is beautiful (and don't associate it with the regret meaning). Have loved it since the first Hunger Games.

It will be associated with "regret" by anyone who is literate and has a decent vocabulary.

People, you are naming an actual person, not a goldfish. Please have some common sense.

MissMarplesbag · 05/04/2023 05:01

Remember your child will have to attend secondary school and the kids are absolutely merciless when it comes to off the wall names. There's a girl in my dc's school called Cinderella, wtf were her parents thinking? The poor kid is bullied relentlessly and dc has said the girl wants to change her name by deed poll when she's 18.

Think very carefully before burdening your child with a name that will limit it's future social/employment opportunities.

Just no- my ads on this thread have come up as Roo whiny the poo but also Vaginal yeast infections. Nooooo

Callixte · 05/04/2023 06:06

There's a character called Roux in the Rogue Angel series of books (about a globetrotting celebrity archaeologist/crime fighter who's the reincarniation of Joan of Arc). That particular Roux is a 500-year-old Frenchman (immortal, of course), so I guess it has been around for a while.

Lwrenagain · 05/04/2023 06:42

@Bubnbutton how about Rúna? Google it, it's old norse I believe. The Rù (roux) as a nickname? I think it's cute x

MaireadMcSweeney · 05/04/2023 06:47

Apart from the sauce connection it just looks a bit ignorant as it's a masculine word in French, a bit like when people call their girls beau or beaux. I think Rue is ok spelling wise but I wouldn't want to call my child 'regret'. I wouldn't want to call them 'white sauce base' either though tbf.

schnubbins · 05/04/2023 06:52

What about Rula ? There was an actress called Rula Lenska once upon a time.

BlueHeelers · 05/04/2023 06:55

ShippingNews · 04/04/2023 21:46

Oh dear, you know that a roux is a white sauce ? Don't do it.

Clearly the OP is ignorant of this. Otherwise she would realise what a terrible name it is to foist on an innocent child.

Seaside1972 · 05/04/2023 07:55

Rudy is unisex…

rattlinbog · 05/04/2023 09:47

Nickname Roo?

Roux is a French surname.
You could always use it as the surname.

liveforsummer · 05/04/2023 09:58

Roux is terrible sorry - base for Mac and cheese 😅. And she's definitely rue the day you named her Rue. Fwiw I get the nickname Roo sometimes. My name is Ruth though which is also shit and wouldn't recommend. Ruby is lovely. Not overly popular but fairly classic so spans generations therefore you will come across others - not necessarily a bad thing imo. It's popular because it's a lovely name

liveforsummer · 05/04/2023 10:03

Do you actually know anyone called Ruby? I can’t think of any adults I know with the name and I’m a teacher of nearly 20 years and can only remember teaching 2 in all that time. There also aren’t any among all my kids peer groups.

I think we have 3 in the primary school I work in with around 500 dc. 2 happen to be in the same year group so there are 7 years including the nursery with none. Dd2 doesn't know any Rubys. Dd1 has one friend aged 14. I know one adult Ruby who is in her 60's and I've moved around - I know a lot of people 😆

SiobhanSharpe · 05/04/2023 10:06

Please don't. It's an awful thing to saddle a child with. You're basically calling her a ginger-haired bloke.
As for Roubaix -- it's a city in northern France, part of the Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing conurbation. Very industrial and not at all a pretty area. Am a little 😕at French people using it as a name for a child but I suppose there are crackpots everywhere.

WeeOrcadian · 05/04/2023 10:09

It sounds more like a nickname. Please don't.

TallulahBetty · 05/04/2023 10:11

LOL. Just LOL

YoungBritishPissArtist · 05/04/2023 10:15

As someone upthread has mentioned, there was a Roo in Home and Away back in the day. Her real name was Ruth?

oh no, User McBunch o' Numbers is here to discount other people's opinions!

slowsundays · 05/04/2023 10:45

Rue is a better spelling but reminds me of the drug addict from Euphoria and the little girl that died on The Hunger Games.

Roux is a sauce. Please don't do Roux.
