Freaking love the name Roux for a baby girl but no one else seems keen - I know it’s my baby, my choice etc but will I regret it?

I really like it. Considered it for DD2 but roux is too associated with the sauce and Rue is regret so there was no spelling with negative connotations

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 22:15

@Twoinapod 😭 typical isn’t it! Lol

@Notellinganyone Roux (or prior spelling variations of it) has been a surname / first name / nickname in parts of France for centuries longer than it's been a sauce.

Which is not to say that's it an ideal name for a presumably British baby in 2023, but it's a fact.

FlappyFish · 04/04/2023 22:17

I know an Irulan that gets called Roo.

Moonshine5 · 04/04/2023 22:18

I suspect X as a letter in a name is not as unique as you might imagine

SecretVictoria · 04/04/2023 22:22

Makes me think of the actress from ‘The Golden Girls’ (I’m old). Her name was actually Eddi-Rue and she obviously just used the second half for her stage name.

margegunderson · 04/04/2023 22:22

I know of a Roubaix

PictureConsequences · 04/04/2023 22:22

It's a masculine spelling, so would be a no for me. Rousse is the feminine, but obvs no X .

newtb · 04/04/2023 22:23

Also it's a surname

Quinque · 04/04/2023 22:24

If you like an x how about Xanthe?

ArmitageShanked · 04/04/2023 22:25

I surprisingly quite like Roo. Definitely not Roux though. Now I just want anything with cheese sauce!

Just stick with Rodney 🤣

chineapplepunks · 04/04/2023 22:26

What about spelling it Rue like the actress Rue Maclanahan?

Kanaloa · 04/04/2023 22:26

I guess there’s also Trudy which could be Tru for short. More than a bit dated but I’ve met a few little Mabels recently so it’s probably not as far out as I think.

Chewbecca · 04/04/2023 22:26

How about Rae?

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 22:27

@QueSyrahSyrah interesting!! 🤔

Roxanne?

Seaside1972 · 04/04/2023 22:33

It’s a lovely name. Go for it. I wanted to call my DC Rue but was dissuaded because of the meaning. I went with Rudy and then realised I could just call them Ru for short. So relieved I accidentally ended up with a Ru anyway. It was my favourite.

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 22:35

@Seaside1972 my absolute favourite for a boy! ❤️we’ll see if I’m brave enough when it comes to the crunch! 😬

Oh gosh!!

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/04/2023 22:48

I think Rue spelled like that is very pretty, and the connotations wouldn't worry me.

gavisconismyfriend · 04/04/2023 22:50

How about Ruah or Rhuach - means breath or spirit.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/04/2023 22:52

Noleafclover1 · 04/04/2023 21:48

Diane is also the name of a sauce, and Anna is a potato dish. Lots of names have another meaning.

I think it's lovely OP. Suspect she'll spend a lot of time explaining that the 'x' is silent though!

Naming a dish an established woman’s name is not entirely the same thing as naming your child after a sauce.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/04/2023 22:54

Béchamel is a nice name.

(Joking)

Rudy is fine for a boy

But I think OP you have to remember naming your child isn’t about you proving you are brave - it’s about giving them a name they will be happy to live with. You can always get a pot plant and give it a fun name.

As in Kanga(roo)
