We are thinking about Eva-Maria for our baby girl. WDYT?

What would you imagine the parents of an Eva-Maria to be like and what kinds of associations do you have with the name?

We want to call her by both names, is it better to use Eva-Maria, Evamaria or Eva Maria?

I'll post the other names on our list later.

I’d assume very Catholic, possibly European. I like Evamaria from the options!

I immediately think of Ave Maria.

I would assume that the mother of an Eva-Maria was younger, as in 2021 there were four hyphenated names in the top hundred for mothers aged under 25, but in none of the other age groups. I prefer Eva Maria of the options, would would expect that she would be known as just Eva by the time she was ten. I don’t have any strong feelings on Eva. It blends right with Evie/Ivy/Ava etc.

Not with the hyphen. Eva and similar are very common now, and she’ll eventually just be called Eva. Id go for Maria on it’s own

It also strikes me as very Catholic and possibly European (Spanish perhaps) but I can't get past it sounding very like Ave Maria (which is probably why I assume they'd be Catholic).

I would assume Spanish / maybe south American parents and Catholic.

There are some names like this in my DC's classes. We are in quite an international area and my DCs go to Catholic school.

According to forebears.io there is one individual in the whole of the South American continent (Brasil) with this forename!

Yes! I think the daughter of a famous 80s German pop star is called this.

I prefer two words (definitely not run into one), no hyphen.

I was about to say Eva-Marie Saint, but had forgotten the Lloyd Cole name check.

Yeah, I think the Ave Maria jokes would drive her mad.

It's pretty though. If you wanted to actually call her Eva and Maria then I would go with Eva-Maria. If just Eva with Maria as a mn then I'd go with Eva Maria. I don't think it works to run them right together as Evamaria.

It's okay, think it's nice but just not my taste. The two names on their own are lovely. You could probably call her by her full name as I know an Ana Maria who never gets shortened.

I would think parents would be young. Catholic. Maybe travellers.

I would assume you’re very religious.

Eva with Maria as middle name would be fine though as would just be called Eva 99% of the time.

Oh you sure showed me...

It's very similar to the name of a child I know from a S. American family. She has a sister with another similar name. There are other double barrelled names at my dcs' school which include Marie/Mary (as it's a Catholic school), but the parents of children from Spanish speaking or Italian speaking families tend choose Maria (I imagine, to reflect their language).

I agree that it sounds very Catholic and people would presume you were. Ave Maria is the first thing that came to my mind too. I doubt most kids her age would have ever heard the words Ave Maria though so very unlikely to torture her with it. Unless you are very Catholic I suppose!

But then I love names steeped in Catholicism. DH had to stop me from using Mercedes, spoilsport

If you don't want the Catholic association then I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Much like other PPs I automatically thought Ave Maria so a Catholic association. It’s a pretty name and if you love it go for it! She’s your baby. I’d only suggest to drop the hyphen. Her first name can still be Eva Maria and she can still be called as such but there’s not a need for the hyphen I don’t think x
