Hugo or George?

Just that really! Between the two, and unsure which to pick. Both have some family significance for us.

Love that they are both short, classic, and straightforward.

(Please don’t worry too much about popularity: neither name is popular at all where we live).

Hugh is nicer than Hugo.
I'd pick Hugh over George.

midsomermurderess · 02/04/2023 19:48

Hugo. It feels quite jolly and bouncy. George feels quite staid.

KirstenBlest · 02/04/2023 19:49

George. Hugh is nice but Hugo is too trendy

Ophelia55 · 02/04/2023 20:04

Thanks for the feedback!

We can’t use Hugh as it’s already in use in the family. We actually prefer Hugo anyway, so that helps! (Interestingly, and as an aside, the Hughs in our family get frustrated with people mishearing their name—you/Hugh—which the hard consonant in Hugo avoids).

The name Hugo has been in use since the 8th century so we don’t see it as trendy!

I love Hugo but George is my son's middle name. I know people think it sounds Posh but Henry used to also be posh but is less so now.

Proudofitbabe · 02/04/2023 20:08

Both great names, but Hugo edges it.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 02/04/2023 20:34

Hugo. I do agree George is a bit royalist for me.

Galectable · 02/04/2023 20:41

First name Hugo second name George

Broccolibravado · 02/04/2023 20:48

I have a Hugo George Grin Best of both worlds.

SkyeBlue28 · 02/04/2023 20:48

George

SnottyLottie · 02/04/2023 20:51

I love both but George is more classic whereas I think Hugo will be seen as ‘dated’ in the near future (I say this as someone whose DS2’s middle name is Hugo)

I think George is very straightforward, traditional, dare I say boring! But it’s reliable and not trendy.

Hugo is slightly more artsy and hipster-ish.

I personally prefer Hugo but both are great names! George Hugo is a great combination in my opinion 😍

I absolutely LOVE George! It's soooo cute

Sadiegirl87 · 02/04/2023 22:27

Definitely George for me, seems more universal and pleasant, Hugo feels a bit stiff and posh

Theoldwoman · 02/04/2023 22:36

George

gluenotsoup · 02/04/2023 22:36

Hugo. George is over popular and lumpy.

user1492757084 · 03/04/2023 03:13

George 10/10
Hugh 10/10
Hugo 8/10

WitheredandOld · 03/04/2023 03:30

Hugo.

I know too many dogs called George. Also there’s the royal connection.

My friend has a hughie which is sweet and I really like Hugh

hopsalong · 03/04/2023 09:00

George.

I really hate the name Hugo and associate it with posh twats.

Also why the 'o'? The English name is 'Hugh'.
Would you call a boy Roberto instead of Robert?

Snowontheblow · 03/04/2023 09:11

Where I live in Scotland Hugo would definitely still be seen as ridiculously posh (mind you there's a lot of ridiculously posh folk here too). Hugh would be nicknamed Shuggie.

RunningOnHope · 03/04/2023 11:03

My 1yo old has a friend called Hugo and thinks his name is "Here you go" said quickly. It's the cutest thing.

Obviously that's no help to you 😅
