Hello. I named my daughter Ruby Mae 4 years ago, when this name was still quite unusual, However it is now No2 on 'the list'. I hate this fact!!!!! I want to aviod this with number 2 due in July. I fancy Oskar but fear this may go the same way (Eastenders!!).and nave no girl ideas at all. Any ideas for unusual but not wierd names!!

My daughters have lovely names, both are oldish & as yet, I don't know anyone with the same name as DD2. There are a few with the same name as DD1.

Obviously not going to post, cos I don't want anyone else using the names !

For inspiration I went through my family tree, but also researched births from the 19th century.

tasjaSAmuminUK · 14/02/2008 09:07

We gave our DD an unusual name - La Luna

no-one would ever have the same name she does.

seeker · 14/02/2008 09:09

Why on earth do people mind so much about having the same name as someone else? I really don't get it!

SixtyNiner · 14/02/2008 09:19

I like Arthur for a boy. When we mentioned this to friends after having a girl we got mixed reactions to it. I like Oscar but it has become very popular in recent years.

If you want to be thorough about it, there's a site, maybe it's at babyworld or called babyname.com where you can type in your name ideas and it will tell you how many babies were named that in the UK in the last year. It's quite useful - it shows which names which sound quite unusual are rising rapidly in popularity.

I wanted my dds to have names which they had a low chance of sharing in class or other places, because my name is boring and common and you end up having to use your (boring) surname all the time as well to distinguish yourself from all the other people with the same boring name.

daizydoo · 14/02/2008 09:36

Seeker - it becomes very frustrating when there are 13 children in your year at school with the same name!! Someone calls your name and everyone answers!

HairyToe · 14/02/2008 10:25

Candice, Melita, Aurelie... all unusual girls names from my schooldays which I have never encountered in real life since

HairyToe · 14/02/2008 10:28

By the way I agree about the spelling thing. Both my DDs have names ending in 'y' but the majority of people spell them with an 'ie'. I just really preferred the way the name looked with a 'y' - maybe a bit more old fashioned. Still mildly annoying though...especially as DD1 can now read her name so is capable of making a fuss if its not spelled right!

Hallgerda · 14/02/2008 10:32

Oooh, HairyToe - were you at school with a spy???

I'e just found a little list dh and I wrote for ds2.
Its has;
Franz
Austin
Mitchell (not keen)
Mack
Sullivan
Cole
Devon
Burton (only because dh is a snowboard addict)

In the end we had an Ethan and ds1 is Ellis.

ah-ha... using my own special sleuthing powers (ok Google) I now understand. No pretty sure it was a different Melita primarily due to the fact Melita the spy looks about 104 and despite feeling pretty decrepit I'm considerably younger than this...

Hallgerda · 14/02/2008 10:45

Sorry!

Pinchypants · 14/02/2008 11:05

My DH is all for resurrecting '70s uncle' names like Roger - between us we have three uncle Rogers! I think he is joking though. I've got a Polish name as my dad's Polish, so I am used to being the only one with my name and I quite like that. DH has an incredibly common name and was one of a handful in his class at school and he didn't like it. So we tried to find a name for DD (now 18 months) that was solid and 'normal' but not seen very often. She's called Bridget - DH came up with it the week before she was born (we were expecting a boy and had no girls names on our list that we both liked), on the basis that we had both only every known one girl at school called Bridget and she was lovely. Completely forgot about Bridget Jones until air stewardess asked her if she was wearing big knickers... No-one else at nursery has the same name. Now with number two on the way trying to come up with something that 'goes' with her name for either a boy or girl, and is still traditional and yet not common - it's a tricky one. We loved Oscar too, until Easties - I spent a long time shouting at the telly during that episode...

suzywong · 14/02/2008 11:08

Agree with Doris, and will raise you a Beryl.

HairyToe · 14/02/2008 11:11

I really like Florence although I get the feeling thats getting more common now.

It doesn't matter if a name is common or not - just pick one you like fgs!

HairyToe · 14/02/2008 11:16

Iris, Mathilda (Tilly), Estelle

Fraser, Scott, Stefan

My DF's middle name is Fernley and I used to know a boy called Te-bo (apparently its an african tribal rhythm)

But you don't have to make up a name or go down the Hengist route to avoid there being 13 in the class! I have a Grace and a Patrick - there are 156 other boys in ds's school and he's the only Patrick, there are 1220 girls in ds's school, and there are only 2 other Graces, both in different years.
