Hello. I named my daughter Ruby Mae 4 years ago, when this name was still quite unusual, However it is now No2 on 'the list'. I hate this fact!!!!! I want to aviod this with number 2 due in July. I fancy Oskar but fear this may go the same way (Eastenders!!).and nave no girl ideas at all. Any ideas for unusual but not wierd names!!

my friends son is called Alexander but the diminutive is Xan. I have never heard of another (there was a Xander in Buffy).

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/02/2008 20:48

We like unusual but not weird names too.

For a girl how about:

Philippa (Pippa/Phil)
Tabitha
Cadence
Verity
Georgina (Georgie)
Antoinette
Gabriella (Gabi or Ella)

We have one of those, I am another one, and we are considering at least 2 of the others if dc2 is a girl, but we haven't met many/any others.

Frankendooby · 13/02/2008 20:52

I really liked Merlin and Lennon for ds1 Thank God dp vetoed them as some time after 2 "celebs" called their sons both those names..The names we have for our 2 sons weren't popular when we chose them but seem to be creeping up.I like Montgomery and Theodore and Alyoisius[bet i have spelt it wrong]The last is in dp's family but we haven't used it.Am totally pants on girls names.I like Nancy and that's it!Best of luck.Go with something that has meaning for you both

CoteDAzur · 13/02/2008 20:53

Anna - 'Fleur' IS a name in France. Why do you say it wouldn't work in French?

TheFallenMadonna · 13/02/2008 20:55

I don't know anyone under the age of 30 called John.

nancy75 · 13/02/2008 20:58

i have just seen someone mention they like nancy as a name - it may not be that common but people called it hate it! when i introduce myself people give me a funny look and say pardon?!?

fizzbuzz · 13/02/2008 21:02

I teach loads of Johns (teenagers).

ninja · 13/02/2008 21:08

Keir for a boy?

Anna8888 · 13/02/2008 21:09

CoteDAzur - because "Fleur" in French isn't (at all) the same register as "Fleur" in English....

TheFallenMadonna · 13/02/2008 21:10

Ooh do you? I've never come across one (also a teacher).

TheFallenMadonna · 13/02/2008 21:10

What do you mean by "the same register" Anna?

Elasticwoman · 13/02/2008 21:12

I've got an Oscar, Rusmum. I thought I deserved one for my performance at his birth in 2000. It became a bit more popular around then I think because of the film Wilde starring Stephen Fry.

Desiderata · 13/02/2008 21:14

Well my brother was born in 1962 and he's called Russell. You still don't come across many of those.

When I was at school in the early 70s, I was the only girl in both primary and secondary school with my name. Sometime in the mid to late 1980s, it became hugely popular and now the world is over-run with me

Just pick a name you like. Why try so hard to be different?

Elasticwoman · 13/02/2008 21:16

What about Russel Brand?
Russ Conway?

lovetIngles2 · 13/02/2008 21:16

I haven't read all 4 pages so sorry If I'm repeating
Bryony / Briony
Nell
Esme
Ned
Noah
Jesse

fizzbuzz · 13/02/2008 21:17

Yeah quite a few, although Jonathan is more common. Millions of those.

My ds tells me when he has a son, he will call it, Chester or Drake {hmm]

TheFallenMadonna · 13/02/2008 21:18

Ah yes. The giving away of Jonathans (and many variations of spelling). And some just Jons. But never a John.

Desiderata · 13/02/2008 21:19

Yes, Elastic. That's two ... and my brother

ivykaty44 · 13/02/2008 21:19

Jane I can safely say this will not be common in the clasroom at your dd school.

Ernest will not be common either for there will not be another boy in the school named Ernest as there would have been in 1901 when it was the number 1 boys name in the uk.

Go to ancestry and search the GRO indexes for 1984 onwards on the database and input the name to see if many come up.

Eunice is another uncommon girls name, I actually traced a Enice in the 1800's by her first name only as it was so uncoomon.

Dax for a boy is not often used and searching 5 census returns between 1841-1891 I could only find 4.

I did though find a MR and Mrs Condom - they didn't have any children - I kid you not.

snice · 13/02/2008 21:20

How about Lydia, Louisa, Helena, Susannah-all very pretty but apparently out of favour.

MegSophandEmma · 13/02/2008 21:24

I like Fay for a girl and Christopher for a boy. Not common(at the moment)

mindy26 · 13/02/2008 21:27

my SIL and BIL both have uncommon names which i like, Daina and Loukas
also logan for a boy is lovely!

bookwormmum · 13/02/2008 23:23

Desiderata - I went to school with a Russell and later on worked with another one. Don't think either was your brother though...

Can't forget Russell Harty either. Now that does date me . Isn't there a astrologer called Russell as well?

glassofwhite · 14/02/2008 08:21

My dd is called Ruby May,9mths old. When our son was born 3yrs ago there was a couple at our parent class who had a dd called Ruby and we both said if we have a dd in the future we would name her Ruby. When I was pg people used to say "oh,is that after the song?". No! Our son has dp name for his middle name, and we werent going to give dd a middle name but people kept saying she would feel left out if we didnt so May is after the month she was born.

glassofwhite · 14/02/2008 08:37

P.S.I agree with the other posts about spelling oskar with a 'k'. My mums name can be spelt 3 ways and hers is spelt the least common way and it drives her up the wall having to correct people about the spelling. Oscar/Oskar is a gorgeous name.

Freddie?
Henry?
Johnny?
