Hello. I named my daughter Ruby Mae 4 years ago, when this name was still quite unusual, However it is now No2 on 'the list'. I hate this fact!!!!! I want to aviod this with number 2 due in July. I fancy Oskar but fear this may go the same way (Eastenders!!).and nave no girl ideas at all. Any ideas for unusual but not wierd names!!

My son's name is Damian, def not a lot of little Damian's in the playground.

My daughter's name is Erin, which at the minute is not popular here but from reading this thread, I can imagine there being a few in her school, she's only 8 weeks old, lol xx

I called my daughter Heather, it suits her, there is only one other in her school.
It is not in the top 50 and has not been for about 40 years

Hmmm, be careful, made up names are very bad news, lots of Kiara, Tanisha, Tea etc around at the moment. Older names such as Hazel, Martha, Evelyn are lovely and for boys anything that makes them sound like they play polo is good, Harley, Sheriden, You need a good costume drama to make reference too.
We called our little one, Sophie, i love it and many people say how nice it is to hear a normal name, we also used Jean as a middle name which i love together and often refer to her as Sophie Jean

I'm feeling very generous - You can have the ones I nearly used for dd2 (as I have no intention of having any more babies ) - Daphne, Victoire or for a boy Lorcan or Lachlan. They have all be checked for the "common" factor in the UK, France and Ireland.

KatieJB · 16/02/2008 23:07

Yes, i believe it is the same as Tia, just a variation on spelling.

I think there will come a time in a few years where the name you are given will indicate your socioeconomic status, lots of Brittany's and Keanu's in B'ham I'm afraid.

My midwife used to work with teenage Mums, she had lots of expereince of made up names, one of her ladies chose the name Chardonnay, but spelt it with an S H, her lady then reminded her that it was a type of wine! My midwife being most discreet and very professional replies, oh really, i did not know, how lovely.

Jean and Margaret, no chance of a comeback just yet.
Joanne, Lisa, Kerry, Sarah etc. even less chance of a comeback as they're so recent.

Since moving to Texas, I have encountered the most interesting names. It seems that anything goes...

Boys:
Cambryn
Jaidyn
Jordan
Cooper
Logan (actually, I've seen this as a both boy & a girl name)
Lake
Landry

Girls:
Cashlie
Mara-Jade
Kaylyn
Piper
Cinnamon
Raegan
Shakira
Valer ia (Vallie for short)
Laralei

Have fun with these. They give us a good chuckle now and again!

Nearly 5 years ago we called dd2 Martha - it suited her right from the start but it was unreal the amount of negative comments we got!! Hope it will make a come back after DR Who

wolveschick · 17/02/2008 20:05

Whatever you choose just bear in mind that having to spell your name on probably a weekly basis for 34 years gets a bit tiresome...........(voice of experience speaks). Plus as I am in the sort of job where you dont want to attract attention to yourself having your very unusual name in the local rag a great deal isnt ideal.

smartiejake · 17/02/2008 20:28

Cushion?

End up with his head being held down a comprehensive school toilet by the resident bully for sure!

frecklyspeckly · 17/02/2008 21:28

heard a little girl being called Xanthe (pronounced Zan-thee)today. My friends daughter is Emel - turkish for precious apparently, variations of which are Emelle or Amelle.

BlueChampagne · 18/02/2008 08:38

Do we expect a crop of Dorcases and Zillahs after the televisation of "Larkrise to Candleford"?

mymatemax · 18/02/2008 20:03

How about Joyce, Shirley or Patricia

Roy, Alan, or Colin

Now I bet they aren't in the top 100

KatieJB · 19/02/2008 21:48

My middle name is Mercy, hated it as a kid but love it now.

Angel2008 · 20/02/2008 12:15

Hi all

I've always loved the name Dominie. Wanted to keep it a "secret" but DP can't say it without sounding like a chav "Dominieeeee" (think "Rickieee" from Eastenders! - so probably out for us!

I've always liked Mercy too - very unusual. Similar to Charity etc.
