Hello. I named my daughter Ruby Mae 4 years ago, when this name was still quite unusual, However it is now No2 on 'the list'. I hate this fact!!!!! I want to aviod this with number 2 due in July. I fancy Oskar but fear this may go the same way (Eastenders!!).and nave no girl ideas at all. Any ideas for unusual but not wierd names!!

choccypig · 12/02/2008 22:22

Famous person has obscure name, very quicky it is no longer unusual.

choccypig · 12/02/2008 22:38

To me, Murray is Field as in Scottish Rugby

smartiejake · 12/02/2008 23:25

Like Oscar but spelt with a c .
I am 42 and have only ever met one other person with my name.
Nicolette
Hated it as a child but actually quite like it now. Can be shortened to Nicki, Lettie or Colette.

ninedragons · 12/02/2008 23:32

Oooh, Nicolette is my middle name, and now my DD's! The only other ones I have met are my aunt and my grandmother's best friend, after whom we were all named.

I love it.

controlfreakyagain · 12/02/2008 23:39

i think you would almost certainly be safe with

norman
frank
ernest
phineas
prosper

AussieSim · 12/02/2008 23:51

Check out Wikipedia Baby Names to find out all the most common names in your area and try to avoid them. For Australia I can find out the top 100 names in New South Wales for the last 10+ years - and then choose one that isn't mentioned - in my case Heidi!

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 13/02/2008 00:00

Whatever you do, don't call a boy Jack. Each of my three DDs has three or four Jacks in her class. Tom, Sam and Ben are also lamentably common. If you called out those four names, two-thirds of the boys in their school would come running.
Among girls, Chloe, Jessica, Ellie and Emily are all over represented.

smartiejake · 13/02/2008 00:14

OOOH lots more Nicolettes how exciting!

ninedragons · 13/02/2008 05:12

My grandmother's best friend (my mother's godmother) was named Nicolette because she was born just after the end of WW1 (Nike being the goddess of victory, obviously). I love that the name has most recently been given 90-odd years after that.

lljkk · 13/02/2008 08:41

Ian, Raymond, Michael, Stuart, Alan, Paul, Darren, Derek, Keith, Gerald (Jerry), Robin -- when's the last time you met any little boys with those names? None of them 'weird'.

Axel is one of my newest (boy) cousins...

Ditto for Girls: Judith (Judy), Lynn, Leigh, Julie, Joanne, Mary, Cheryl, Sharon, Susan, Sally, Karen, Joan, Josephine, Fern, Rachel, Stephanie, Deborah, Lydia, Melissa, Melanie, Stacey, Nicole, Paula, Tracey, Miriam, Kelly, Carrie, Michelle.... Just think of names of people you know age 30+.

tjacksonpfc · 13/02/2008 08:59

my ds is alan but spelt alun and my dd has an unusal name aswell that we dont know of anyone else having

maisiemog · 13/02/2008 12:10

For a boy, You could go very traditional, but not very fashionable like: Wilfred (Wilf or Fred for short), Herbert (Herbie, Herb), Albert or Arthur (bertie, artie)
For a girl: Beryl (the peril), Begonia, Dora, Hebe, Nella, I quite like Cornelia mainly because I like Nealy, and Nell as pet names, My great aunts were Gertrude (Gertie) and Florence (Flossie), oh and Dorothy has lots of cute pet forms such as Dolly and Dotty which are sweet for a little girl or Dorrie or something for an older girl.
There is a great site called think baby names here, where you can choose the start of end of the name and the site will give you suggestions.

MyEye · 13/02/2008 12:22

lol at Helen: way exotic. I hankered after Mary and Margaret for similar reasons. Bet you'd be safe with both names for a few generations at least.

Love Julia. Beautiful name, and very thin on the ground.

Isn't it weird how there aren't millions of little Dianas running around?

Flibbertyjibbet · 13/02/2008 12:28

at MyEye - you've got me and two of my 3 sisters there in the first three names you mentioned!!
Go on, guess another name I'm dying to see if you come up with my big sis

stuffitllama · 13/02/2008 12:33

HI Dittany is going to think I'm stalking her BUT I'M NOT!

MyEye · 13/02/2008 12:33

Flibberty: how funny. Um, Penelope (Penny)? Jenny?

MyEye · 13/02/2008 12:33
