Following on from another thread where a poster is the same age as myself but didn’t know anyone called Phoebe (yet I know of loads my age)

I thought it would be interesting to see what the most popular names in your year groups/friends were, depending on peoples locations.

So for example: I was born in the mid 90’s, South London and I grew up with loads of:

Sophia
Grace
Phoebe
Molly
Lily

Jack
Tom
Joe
Sam
Max

5 Emmas, 3 Lauras and 3 Millys in my year at school - born mid 80s! Boys names seemed more varied, lots of Ollies though.

DahliaMacNamara · 16/03/2023 23:29

Started school in the early 70s. Class was populated by 1 Sarah, 2 Rachels, 2 Debbies, 1 Jackie, 2 Lindas, 2 Traceys, 1 Susan, 1 Jane, 1 Julie, 2 Michaels, 3 Roberts, 2 Andrews, 2 Pauls, 1 Mark, 2 Garys and a handful of outliers like Dean and Heidi. My own name excluded, but outside the top twenty.
Actually, I think there might have been a third Debbie.

That's based on the most popular names I can remember from my class at school (it was a catholic school if that makes a difference)

hanrahk3 · 17/03/2023 00:06

The repeated names in my year were either Irish names (Aisling, Aoife, Sinéad, Niamh, Aine, Sadhbh, Cliona, Maeve, Eimear, Ciara, Caoimhe) or classic(ish) names like Kate, Sarah, Sophie, Emma, Hannah, Laura, Rachel. The most common boys names seemed to be Jack, Seán, Conor, David, Michael, Shane etc, there were multiples of each. Born in the mid nineties in Dublin!

It's amazing how favoured names change with the times. There are lists here that don't contain a single name I would have encountered among my peers growing up. Also regional differences.
