Following on from another thread where a poster is the same age as myself but didn’t know anyone called Phoebe (yet I know of loads my age)

I thought it would be interesting to see what the most popular names in your year groups/friends were, depending on peoples locations.

So for example: I was born in the mid 90’s, South London and I grew up with loads of:

Sophia
Grace
Phoebe
Molly
Lily

Jack
Tom
Joe
Sam
Max

Born in 79, moved from the Midlands to the South in the late 80s. My best friend in both places was called Amanda. So for girls - Amanda, Rebecca, Emma, Louise/a, Joanne/a, Sarah. At university there were three Lucys on my course. Now (although not then) I seem to know a lot of Cats or Catherines.

Boys - Peter, Tom, Dan, Robert, Kevin, Damien, James/Jamie, Nick. Still all fairly common now I think?

ISeeTheLight · 16/03/2023 17:57

Born late 80s, abroad, western Europe. Many, many Sophies & Toms, and the local versions of John & Joseph. Pretty similar to the UK around that time I think.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 16/03/2023 18:46

I was born in the early 80s and went to a girls’ school. There were fifteen girls called Hannah in my year, including two called Hannah Jones. One of them was really good at cross-country so to distinguish them she was universally known (including by the teachers) as Running Hannah Jones, and the other one was Not Running Hannah Jones.

Then when I arrived at university there were so many Davids that every single one of them had a nickname by the end of freshers’ week, which stuck for the entirety of their degree and beyond. Some were innocuous, such as DVD Dave (DVDs were still quite new technology and he was the only person we knew with a DVD player) but most were unflattering and some were genuinely unprintable.

It’s probably no surprise that it was important to me to avoid the top ten when naming my own children.
