What are your thoughts on Tristan for a boy? Is it a name people come across often? Any associations with the name, both positive Nd negative?

I quite like the shortening Tris too

I really like it and had it on my list, it’s not very common at all but not so unusual that people would struggle with it or find it a bit “out there”.

ourflagmeansdeath · 12/03/2023 21:26

I actually quite like it I think and it'd be fine to choose but I dislike the nickname Tris. Maybe because I always associate it with the female main character from the Divergent series so it seems feminine to me. But to be fair that Tris was a shortening for Beatrice. Tristan's still a nice name!

WhisperingAutistic · 12/03/2023 21:40

I only know one in real life and he's 16. It's also one of the characters from the new All Creatures Great and Small and he uses Tris too.
I quite like it.

DustyLee123 · 12/03/2023 21:43

I like it.

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 12/03/2023 21:50

Tristan and Isolde is the main connotation for me. Rather sad story and quite fitting really since in my language the beginning of the name does translate as sad.I quite like the name though.

smellyflowers · 12/03/2023 21:52

Ooooh! Nice!

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 12/03/2023 21:55

Love it.

TheInterceptor · 12/03/2023 22:01

My third son's middle name. Love it.

whiteroseredrose · 12/03/2023 22:03

I like it.

Twoinapod · 12/03/2023 22:06

I love it, the only thing I think of is Tristan from stardust but he’s a good character.

TenThousandSpoons · 12/03/2023 22:07

Yes Stardust is the association for me too but I love that film.

ISpyCobraKai · 12/03/2023 22:11

It was my boy name 31yrs ago but I had a Dd.
Still love it.

HotPenguin · 12/03/2023 22:27

I like the name and thought about using it, but was put off because triste means sad in french. If you don't speak French then this need not bother you!

Sparklybutold · 12/03/2023 22:28

Really don't like the name. Sorry.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/03/2023 22:31

I like it but I prefer Tristram

evemillbank · 12/03/2023 22:50

I think it's a really weak name

Barleysugar86 · 12/03/2023 22:54

I like Tristan. I dated one briefly that rode a motorbike in my youth and was 6ft 6, and his name seemed pretty cool on him!

Considered it for my boys list but Husband didn't like it as thought it sounded a bit try hard posh along with Hugo or Rupert so I was outvoted.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 12/03/2023 22:56

It’s lovely, it was on my list, I like
that it’s uncommon but historical/ traditional, for me it had positive associations from Tristan in ACGAS, who was a fabulous character.

CambsAlways · 12/03/2023 22:57

Not a fan sorry

PPop · 12/03/2023 22:57

My brother is a Tristan, it's a good name and good connotations as he is a nice man.
Hard to take the piss out of too which is a win for names imo when sending kids to school - though awful as a sister 😂

Leeds2 · 12/03/2023 22:58

To me, it is a very "weak" name and I don't really like it. My main association is with Tristan Farnon from All Creatures Great And Small, who I think is a great character.

Mountainsnowdrop · 12/03/2023 23:01

It is a nice name, but not for me sorry.
A "Tristan" I met through OLD messed me about big time!
And he's done it to others too.

blackice · 12/03/2023 23:03

Love it!

Apollonia1 · 12/03/2023 23:04

I love it!
I had b/g twins, but if they were both boys, the second twin would have been Tristan.

Bimblybomeyelash · 12/03/2023 23:04

I know a few teen Tristan’s. I used to think of it as a ‘posh’ name. But along with Hugo, Felix and Sebastian it’s now far more mainstream.
