What are your thoughts on Tristan for a boy? Is it a name people come across often? Any associations with the name, both positive Nd negative?

I quite like the shortening Tris too

I've never been keen on it but not really sure why...just doesn't do anything for me.

I like Tristan. I dated one briefly that rode a motorbike in my youth and was 6ft 6, and his name seemed pretty cool on him!

Considered it for my boys list but Husband didn't like it as thought it sounded a bit try hard posh along with Hugo or Rupert so I was outvoted.

Did he live in South London? Because if he did, he was very cool (and a crush of mine).

NannyElle · 13/03/2023 00:05

It sounds nice but means sadness. Spanish/French word for sad is literally triste so wouldn't want to give a child a name with such a negative meaning

Orphlids · 13/03/2023 00:06

I love it. Tristan and Isolde for me, so I think of it as a very romantic name, full of stirring Wagnerian passion.

Zola1 · 13/03/2023 00:07

Hate it, sounds geeky and awkward

Hahaha- he was actually, might have been the same one! (Dark blonde hair?)

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/03/2023 00:10

Dirty blond hair and a leather jacket?

He was hot.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/03/2023 00:12

Unless there were two. One can only hope.

Exactly the kind of man I warn DD about.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2023 00:13

I think it's a bit wet, a bit twee.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 13/03/2023 00:15

I know a couple now in their 30s/40s. All very nice men.
Dated one in my teens, not in south london though as he sounds filthy 😉 and nothing bad to report. He was a good guy and still is.
Its a nice name, easy to spell and say.
Tris did get confused with Chris a lot though. Maybe not such an issue now.

pinkpotatoez · 13/03/2023 00:16

I immediately think of Tristan Thompson and he's a cheat, I think a lot of younger people will think of him too. It is a great name though

BridieConvert · 13/03/2023 00:17

I love it! Don't hear it very often but it's also not an "out there" name

cassiastatham · 13/03/2023 00:30

I like the name but when I met a Tristan IRL, love went away and it don't live here anymore

CallieQ · 13/03/2023 01:21

Yes!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 13/03/2023 01:24

On my list for a son , but have three daughters.

fruitandfibreg · 13/03/2023 07:43

It's quite common in wales. I don't mind it

CoffeeChocolateWine · 13/03/2023 07:47

Love it. My youngest DD would have been Tristan if she was a boy. I've known two humans and one dog called Tristan in my lifetime! One in their 40s now, and one is the DS of a good friend of mine who had her baby about a month before my DD was born. I couldn't believe she had chosen the same name as I had picked for a boy...and she also picked our reserve name as the middle name 😂

user1492757084 · 14/03/2023 04:17

Tristan is a fine name for a boy and man.
It would be in my own personal best boy's 100 names.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 14/03/2023 05:06

Love it.

garlictwist · 14/03/2023 05:21

It makes me think of the word "sad". It's also a bit of a wet name. Not for me.

mynameisnotkate · 14/03/2023 05:25

I like the name but I couldn’t use a name that means sadness. In the Arthurian legend, where the name comes from, his father calls him Tristan because his mother died in childbirth.
