I didn't use the name I mentioned earlier because although I think it's beautiful, I grew up with an unusual name myself and it made life miserable because people took the piss. There's people in this thread taking the piss, so imagine in real life- I've had receptionists laugh, teachers used to laugh and make up "funny" versions of it, I had to spell it every single time, I've had people ask "Are you sure?" And so on. I use my middle name now!
My daughter has a name that's not popular but it is nice and "normal."

Interesting isn't it how different people react to this

I too have an unusual name I always have to spell. On top of that it's unisex and many feel it's more male than female so I've had lots of are you sure and one memorable British gas person on the phone telling me I couldn't possibly be female as it was a male name.

I dont mind the unusualness of my name
I dont mind spelling it
I utterly loathe it being unisex. It annoys me so much.

My own children have (apart from oldest where her named soared from her birth year) got names that are unusual buy not weird. 2 of them have to spell it. Sometimes dd1 has too as well but most can these days spell Phoebe. Ds gets asked with a C or a K at times but not often.

For me the not unisex was the important part I like my name is unusual and wanted more unusual choices for the children (when my Phoebe was born it entered the top 50 for the first time)

I like Athena but those of us of a certain age will think of the shops that sold posters of kittens in a wine glass and topless men with a baby Blush

Oh yes! Also the heavily made up lips eating a banana!

Dirtydiesel · 11/03/2023 11:54

I have always liked genevieve.

Oh yes! Also the heavily made up lips eating a banana!

Plus the female tennis player scratching her arse!
Athena poster shops were great!
looking in the rack of rolled - up posters to see if they had the ‘Number” you wanted .

Frameless picture frames were of that era as well.
Now horrendously dated.
Will they ever come back into fashion?!

As for girl’s names

Naming kids after mis pronounced “Proper” names is bizarre e.g “Lilibet”

We could see
“Meelya” ( From Amelia)
”Mundi” ( Rosamund)
“Maffyew” ( Matthew)
&c

I think very feminine flouncy names are beautiful to hear but interestingly didn’t use them - Aurelia, Valentina, Annabella

My ultimately favourite female name is Elizabeth (which I did use)

Also think Ottilie is stunning (but I know it’s not popular on here)
