Hi, which name is the best for a girl: Gabriela or Greta?

Gabriela

Gabriella. For sure.

Although if Greta is your nans name or something, then I can see why you're considering it. But it'd be Gabriella for me.

They’re both beautiful.

I think I prefer Gabriela, although I don’t like the nickname Gabi, which puts me off a bit.

Greta but short for Margaretta

Greta, as I don’t like Gabby which Gabriela inevitably gets shortened to.

Gabriella. I think Bree or Ella are nice nn than Gabi.

I much prefer Greta. Gabriela is too frilly and Gabby, Bri and Ella are even worse.

Gabriella by a country mile. Greta sounds really ugly to my ears, Gabriella is beautiful.

I love the nickname Bri or Ella. Not too keen on Gabby.

Greta, by a long shot. It has a lovely Nordic vibe.

Gabriela would be shortened to Gabby, which imo is really unattractive.

I wanted Gabrielle (an e not an a) but dh vetoed it, DD is 17 and still tells her dad off, she loves it.

I would choose Greta because it's very international in both sound and spelling. I like Gabriella, and Gabby wouldn't bother me, but Gabriella isn't that international. Greta is already international over both Slavic and Anglophone countries and works in Roman and Germanic languages.

Gabriella (with the double ‘L’), but not a fan of the nn Gabby.

Gabriella with a double ll is no good if you are Spanish. I am guessing that Gabriela is a deliberate choice.

I have a Gabrielle. Not with the ‘a obviously but I love it and get a lot of compliments. But She is mainly known as Gabby 🫢

Gabriella spelt with 2 l's preferably - but Gabriela is also better than Greta.

Disclaimer: very biased as I have a Greta. Obviously we love it, but it is a marmite name (see comments above!). We chose it precisely because we didn’t want an overly ‘pretty’ or girly name, and prefer names that are strong, characterful and international.

Gabriela is fine too - nothing wrong with it at all - but it exemplifies exactly the type of über-feminine, frilly name that we’re not keen on.

A few reasons why we landed on Greta:

The Nordic/Scandi vibe (we also liked Frida and Annika)
Easy to pronounce and spell (although we have had ‘Greeta’ occasionally)
Everyone recognises it but it’s uncommon
Nice meaning (‘pearl’)
Works well internationally: currently popular in Italy and also well used in Germany/Austria/Sweden/Spain

We named DD before Greta Thunberg became well known and have only since discovered that many people dislike her - but I think it says more about them than her and doesn’t make us like it any less.

Prefer Gretel to Greta.
