What are your thoughts on Jonathan? Which spelling do you prefer - Jonathan or Johnathan

I like the shortenings Jonty and John but not so keen on Nathan or Jonny / Jonno

I think Jonathan is the usual spelling by far. John (or Jon) is nice but Jonty is affected IMO.

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/02/2023 17:16

@Consufed sorry what do you mean by Jonty being 'affected'?

Nice name. I’d spell Jonathan. Jon is the shortening imo. Jonty is a name in its own right

FadoFado · 13/02/2023 17:17

Jonathan is fine, although the shortening Jonty makes me cringe a bit. Too Hooray Henryish for me.

I think the spelling of Johnathan looks very clunky.

Consufed · 13/02/2023 17:23

It means that personally, I think it sounds pretentious. I can't imagine a straightforward, trustworthy or down-to-earth Jonty. Obviously it's just a word, like all names, and others might disagree. But that's my honest reaction to it, probably due to my perception of the Jontys I've met.

RuthW · 13/02/2023 17:26

Jonathan is lovely especially shortened to Jonty.

Wonnle · 13/02/2023 17:31

Does it really matter what bunch randoms on a forum think of any particular name ?

Zola1 · 13/02/2023 17:32

Jonty is cringe, absolutely gives me the ick. It's too try hard.
Don't love Jonathan as a name..seems very dated, I was born 1991 and there were 5 in my school year of 90 kids.
If you're going to do it, go Jonathan not Johnathan

Bigteamug · 13/02/2023 17:33

I like Jonathan 👍

KirstenBlest · 13/02/2023 17:34

The Johnathan spelling is awful as is Jonothan.
Jonty is fine
I like Jonathan

AmandaMirandaPanda · 13/02/2023 18:26

I like Jonathan. Personally I think Jonty is OK, but it strikes me as a very little boy, perhaps shortened to Jon for school. Johnathan always makes me think someone mixed up John and Jonathan at some point, which may be unfair, but I think it's pretty recent as an established variation.

TiaI · 13/02/2023 18:29

I like Jonathan and jonty, with nick name Jon or Jonny

mrscumberbatch11 · 13/02/2023 20:02

Jonathan is fine, if a little dated.

Never seen it spelled with an h, it looks clunky.

I've actually never heard of Nathan as a shortening of Jonathan, which took me by surprise, but is very obvious when you look at the name. All the Jonathan's I know are shortened to John or Johnny.

Although having just checked, most of he ones I know are spelt with an O - Jonathon.

user1492757084 · 14/02/2023 07:58

I like Jonty for a full name only if Scottish connections. It is Scottish for young John.

I like Jock - also a Scottish diminutive of John. Jack is a more common diminutive of John.
I like Jonathon best because I like the short form, Jon, and don't like it shortened to Nathan.
Johnathon seems uneccessary in spelling.
Johnathan is messy and offers the terrible Nathan as a nick name.
The short forms Jonny and Johnny are fine if used by young mates.
My preferencec ..
I love John. It is the nicest, followed by
Jock,
Jonathon,
Jon,
Jonty,
Johnny,
Jonny,
Jack
Johnathon,
Jonathan/Johnathan
Nathan least of all.

TheOriginalEmu · 14/02/2023 11:00

Not for me. It’s very 80s imo. I like Jonny tho

stclair · 14/02/2023 11:03

My db is Jonathan. He gets shortened to Jona.

Suzi888 · 14/02/2023 11:05

permanentholiday · 14/02/2023 11:05

RoseMartha · 14/02/2023 11:06

antipodeancanary · 14/02/2023 11:10

Jonathan is a great name. Nicely shortened to Jon or Jonny

17caterpillars1mouse · 14/02/2023 11:34

Maybe I've been watching too much 'call the midwife' but I think Jonty is lovely

ReviewingTheSituation · 14/02/2023 11:46

Without the h, for sure.

Jon is a great diminutive, and there are plenty of Jontys who aren't at all affected or pretentious.

viques · 14/02/2023 11:51

Jonathon is a great name, with plenty of diminutives to choose from once you have met your baby.

Johnathan looks more like a spelling mistake on the birth certificate than a parental choice.

WinterFoxes · 14/02/2023 12:04

Jonathan is a great name. I like Jon, Jonny or Jonnie but not Jonty which sounds a but twee.

finallychangedmyusername · 14/02/2023 12:27

I love Jonathan and Jonty. Johnathan looks like a spelling error to me, even though I know it's an acceptable alternate.
